The problem for Bitcoin is the fact that it has inspired a number of other cryptocurrencies, which are now vying for top spot. Could this be another case of Betamax and VHS where the original is usurped by a newer copy with a similar design?

Litecoin

Litecoin was one of the original forks of the Bitcoin chain, which occurred in 2011. It is technically nearly identical to its forefather but has a much larger supply limit of 84 million LTC to 21 million BTC. It also has a decreased block generation time of 2.5 minutes to Bitcoin’s ten minutes. For these reasons, the currency founded by former Google employee Charlie Lee has been dubbed the silver to bitcoin’s gold.

Because of the size of Litecoin in comparison to Bitcoin, experts believe it should be worth about 25 percent of the value of its predecessor. As it stands, though, the altcoin is only worth around 2 percent of Nakamoto’s currency. This could mean that now is the perfect time to invest in Litecoin because going by this theory it should be worth over $2000 at the time of writing. Between its inception and 2017, Litecoin did very little, remaining virtually worthless and unheard of.

But early last year the coin was added to the world famous cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, and this brought it into the spotlight. In fact, Litecoin was in the top ten rising coins of 2017 with a 5046 percent gain. In mid-December, the coin hit a high of $375, highlighting its potential not just as an alternative to Bitcoin, but as a challenger. With its speedy transaction times, Litecoin has the capacity to be used for day-to-day payments, while Bitcoin has become a great option for moving larger sums of money.

EOS

EOS is a newcomer to the cryptocurrency scene, but people are getting extremely excited about its potential. It’s currently a token on the Ethereum network, but on June 1 will be released as its own open source software. Anyone holding it now needs to register their tokens before that date. Among some of the most exciting cryptocurrencies on the market is OmiseGo, and it has been backed by Ethereum founder Buterin for success. OMG is a subsidiary of Omise, a leading online payment provider in Southeast Asia. The developers have been working alongside the Ethereum community since it began in 2015, and the coin is designed to combat the scalability issues of Ethereum. It also has a heavy focus on enabling payments and transactions in crypto and fiat currencies.

In a big recent move, OmiseGo has collaborated with two of the top financial institutions in South Korea, Shinhan, and Woori. The huge banks will use OMG’s blockchain platform to execute their transactions. The company has also struck a deal with the government of Thailand to develop a payment and identification system for the country using its blockchain. These steps could pave the way for mass adoption in the near future, and with the currency currently trading around the $18 mark, it could be an ideal time to get involved.

Researchers Get Close Up of Bacteria Signaling Using New ‘Movie’ Technique

New research has revealed how bacteria use complex signaling networks in which to adapt to their environment. The study was carried out by John Innes Centre researchers in an attempt to better our understanding of plant and human diseases. To help them develop an advanced analysis method they used data from a previous study involving the plant-growth promoting bacteria Pseudomonas fluorescence. To help with their research the John Innes team put to use data gathered from a number of different microbiological experiments. In doing so they’ve been able to create a comprehensive ‘signaling map’ for the bacterial protein Hfq.

“Our technique allows us to follow every gene and protein in a bacterial cell, and say how it changes and at what level that change occurs, in response to a given signal input,” says Dr. Jacob Malone, project leader of the research. “We are using the same data sets as previous studies but we have developed a way of integrating the data using mathematics and programming. If you consider the individual elements of a movie: the photography, the soundtrack, and the script; by combining them you get a whole movie – something greater than the sum of the parts. This is the same principle, only with genetics.”

The team is hopeful the results from the study will change the way bacteria signaling networks are investigated, and that they’ll also advance our knowledge of know bacteria interact with their surroundings and how they instigate infections.

James Webb Space Telescope’s Ready to Observe the Formation of the First Galaxies and Stars of the Universe

Scientists are all set to launch NASA’s James Webb Telescope in a project that will study previously observed sections of the sky in an attempt to better understand the formation of our universe. Sections of the Hubble Ultra-Deep Field (HUDF) and the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) are where the scientists will be focusing their attention during the project. In order to get a clear image as possible, the scientists will use Webb’s mid-infrared instrument (MIRI) to study HUDF and Webb’s near-infrared camera (NIRCam) to capture a section of GOODS.

“By mixing [the data from] these instruments, we’ll get information about the current star formation rate, but we’ll also get information about the star formation history,” said Hans Ulrik Norgaard-Nielsen, principal investigator for the proposed observations, and an astronomer at the Danish Space Research Institute, Denmark. About 10,000 galaxies can be seen in just a tiny section of the sky in the HUDF image, but they are extremely faint, making them some of the oldest, most visible galaxies in the universe.

Pablo Perez-Gonzalez is one of the co-investigators on the proposed observation, and an astrophysics professor at the Complutense University of Madrid, Spain. He confirmed that Webb’s powerful spectrographic instruments will allow scientists to gain a deeper understanding of the initial phases of the formation of supermassive black holes among other things.

With the MIRI being able to observe in an infrared wavelength of between 5 and 28 microns, the researchers aim to look at HUDF in 5.6 microns. According to Perez-Gonzalez the area of HUDF that they’ll observe will be around that of 4,000 galaxies. He also advised that with thanks to Webb, they “will detect around 2,000 to 2,500 galaxies, but in a completely different spectral band, so many galaxies will be quite different from the ones that [Hubble] detected.”

Using the NIRCam the team will study a region of GOODS that are located near the section of HUDF that they’ve observed. “These NIRCam images will be taken in three bands, and they will be the deepest obtained by any guaranteed time observation team,” said Perez-Gonzalez. NIRCam has the ability to observe in infrared wavelength in the range of 0.6 to 5 microns and as explained by Perez-Gonzalez, the researchers will use it to observe a section of GOODS.

The study involved scientists taking a closer look at all those genes that turned on or off while undergoing normal development. Cells were then profiled individually using RNA sequencing analysis to determine the gene expression profile in human sperm stem cells. Results from the study outlined four very distinct phases of sperm stem cell development. In addition to that, it also revealed transitions in factors that influence various cellular states including transcription factors, cell cycle regulators, and signaling factors.

These results also hold some implications for understanding how certain cancers arise. The risk of contracting testicular and prostate cancer is higher in men with infertility issues. “Our study sheds new light on how genes normally function in sperm stem cells,” commented Cairns. “The next steps will be to use this knowledge to better understand what changes happen when sperm stem cells don’t develop normally and instead convert into cancer cells.”
