Getting to Grips With Whats Below Us

Almost every day a new study is being revealed about something new that’s been discovered in the sky or on a nearby planet, but very little is ever reported about what’s under the ground below us. And for that reason, we know a lot less in this area.

However, a new study conducted by geoscientists at the University of Colorado Boulder hopes to change that as they shine a light on the way in which rainfall shapes a part of our planet beyond what we can see.

On Earth, to find the hard rock on the ground surface is rare as it’s often hidden by a layer of vegetation, soil, and other debris that’s been aptly named by scientists as the “critical zone.” The main role of the critical zone is to control how groundwater is stored and the way in which it’s released into streams.

Groundwater is an essential part of our existence. It’s used in both industry and agriculture, and without it, we would suffer immensely. And while most of us in developed countries have an abundance of groundwater available to us, it’s not passive, and reacts with various rocks along its travels, transforming both the rock itself and the nutrient and mineral content of the water.

The new study involved examining the differences between the Boulder Creek Critical Zone Observatory (CZO) in the Colorado Front Range, and the Calhoun CZO in the South Carolina piedmont. In the former, fresh rock lies just below the surface whereas in the latter, fresh rock is found much further down below the surface. In terms of soil color, the Colorado CZO is a grayish brown, whereas the soil at the South Carolina CZO is a deep red.

One of the main goals of the study was to figure out and explain why these differences occur and the area they decided to focus on to help them do that was the weather. In order for the team to test whether rainfall could explain the many differences of weathering, the researchers tracked it as it seeped through the landscape.

“Weathering of bedrock may be the most important geologic process since it produces the soil we depend on for our existence,” says the director of the NSF Critical Zone Observatories program, Richard Yuretich.

The study revealed that in Colorado, the critical zones formed under dry conditions, whereas in South Carolina, they form under wet conditions. And the model created by the team successfully depicted that.

“Being able to predict these patterns of weathering puts us in a position to understand things we care about, from water supplies maintaining healthy soils,” says Suzanne Anderson, a fellow of CU Boulder’s Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research (INSTARR).

Is the Lithium Battery as We Know it About to Get a Much Needed Overhaul?

Another increase in the efficiency of lithium batteries comes with thanks to a new design developed by Cadenza Innovation. Not only does this innovative design improve performance, but it also lowers costs, and is much safer than the standard lithium-ion batteries in widespread use today.

While Cadenza is the brains behind the new battery design, it licenses the technology to various battery manufacturers to be used in a number of different applications. This includes energy grid storage, industrial machinery, and electric vehicles.

The founder of the four-year-old company is Christina Lampe-Onnerud, a former MIT postdoc who has more than 20 years experience in the battery industry. Her vision for the company is to help advance the battery industry just as it reaches a changing point. And the way in which they’ve been doing that is by securing partnerships with organizations at every step of the battery supply chain, from those supplying the industrial minerals right through to the end user.

One of Cadenza’s most significant achievements to date is its “supercell” battery that’s found in the Fiat 500e model. The company is also about to finish an energy storage system that will be used by the New York Power Authority. But, even better than that, is the forming of a recent partnership with Shenzen BAK Battery Company. At the start of 2019, they will mass produce batteries based on Cadenza’s supercell architecture.

While knowing people in the industry has certainly helped Lampe-Onnerud on her journey, it’s more the technology’s performance that’s accelerated the company’s success. It’s all good and well having a battery that can perform more efficiently, but usually, they’re more expensive. But, that’s not the case with Cadenza’s technology. With this battery, you get both increased performance levels and lower production costs.

Most rechargeable lithium-ion batteries get their power from sheets of rolled metal often referred to as “jelly rolls.” These jelly rolls are made in different sizes depending on their need. In bigger batteries, they tend to be quite large to limit the overall cost of the battery. Or they can be made smaller in order to achieve a more sleek cell design. The problem with doing this is there are safety issues with tightly packing these jelly rolls into a battery as if one jelly roll happens to overheat, the whole system can fail.

Luckily, Cadenza managed to find a way around this with its supercell technology, and that comes in the form of a noncombustible ceramic fiber material. This material hugs each jelly roll tightly, helping to control the cell’s overall temperature and isolate and potential damage caused by overheated jelly rolls. Each jelly roll is then encased by a metal shunt and a flame retardant layer.

Designing the battery in such a way enables the jelly rolls to be packed tighter allowing greater energy density safely, and at a reduced cost. In 2016, when the supercell technology was publically revealed, Lampe-Onnerud was very vocal in saying it could be used to increase the range of Tesla cars by as much as 70 percent. Now, it’s just a case of getting the manufacturers to take the bait and adopt the architecture.

Ever since her academic days spent at MIT, Lampe-Onnerud has continued to keep a close connection with MIT, giving guest lectures on campus, and participating in alumni groups. In 2004, she founded the company Boston-Power which developed into a globally recognized battery manufacturer supplying both commercial and retail customers. Upon leaving Boston-Power, Lampe-Onnerud began to develop what is now known as Cadenza’s supercell with her husband in the garage of their home.

3 Ways Tech Has Changed the Modern Consumer

The advancements in tech have changed the way we live our life. The change is slow, but it’s evident. If you are a business owner, you need to mind these changes if you need to survive. With that said, following, we are explaining how tech has changed our lives very recently.

  1. Smart Devices are a Convenience

People pay for convenience; the best branding agencies keep it in mind when promoting a product. They don’t advertise the feature of the product. Instead, it translates how this feature will help the user.

This is why most companies show futuristic concepts every year. It helps to make smart living a reality. The connective device marketplace is ready to take off, but how do companies stand out?

Consumers want devices that offer convenience while anticipating their needs. They look out for the early adopters. Safe and energy saving are two major selling points. People invest in technology with the hope it will keep their family safe and convenient. But what is smart?

Thoughtful is the new smart. You need to fulfill a certain need to facilitate them in a way no one else was doing.

  1. Consider Wearable Tech

Wearable tech has been in the marketplace for quite some time, and it is changing how people lead their life. Today, most wearable tech is only limited to help people track their health data with diet and exercise.

For most people, warble tech is the first step to a healthy life including better diet, low stress and leading a more active life. Despite a lukewarm reception, the Wearable Tech marketspace is gaining momentum.

The smartwatches have taken a big chunk of this market space. But how does that help? According to research from Frost & Sullivan, most companies will introduce smart wear tech to their workforce to save on insurance premium.

This will motivate their employees to lead a healthy lifestyle. Well-being programs are becoming central thanks to wearable tech. However, we are curious to see what else the wearable tech has in store for us.

  1. They See Results

Digital Transformation has changed the way we used to shop. They made e-commerce and mobile shopping mainstream. As digital shopping has become a norm, companies are optimizing their supply chain to improving the shopper’s experience. Consumers want a seamless user experience.

While arguing how Wearable Tech is changing four different industries, John Boitnott of Entrepreneur says we are adopting this tech a bit slow, but it has much potential. People want instant results; if they don’t get them, they won’t care about the product, service or its advancements. So, you must take care of that!

Consumers now want quick shipping and this increases both delivery and return rates. Most online shoppers expect free and same day shipping. They are also looking for free returns and exchange. These elements are important for e-commerce’s growth.

Because of this, retailers are not looking to increase the number of their customer. Instead, they look forward to improving their shopping experience.

5 Ways to Improve Your Website’s Loading Speed

Loading speed is one of the most important factors in the success or failure of your website. Speed can increase traffic, encourage repeat visitors and grow conversions. About half of internet users (especially in developed countries) expect any web page they visit to load in 3 seconds or less. Every additional delay results in a steady reduction in overall conversions.

If your website’s loading speed isn’t satisfactory, you can expect to lose many of your potential customers to competing websites. Fortunately, no website is irredeemable where speed is concerned. You can make the following changes to raise your site’s performance to where it should be.

1.Resize Images

Depending on the nature of your website, images are responsible for anywhere between 40 and 90 percent of its weight. If you are going to get your site loading faster, there’s no better place to start than the optimization of images.

Most freely available photo editing software (including the most basic ones such as Microsoft Paint on Windows) allow you to shrink the size of images or change the image format (from bulky formats like BMP to more compressed ones such as JPEG and PNG).

More advanced tools such as Photoshop and Fireworks give you more options including a sliding scale that offers a preview of the quality of the resized image.

2.Content Delivery Networks (CDNs)

The Internet has no central command. It’s a network of billions of devices scattered across the globe. When you launch a website (and depending on what your product is), you’ll attract visitors from all over the world. But since the server your website is hosted on is in a specific location, people further from this location will see your pages’ load slower.

For example, if your website’s host server is in Germany, a visitor from New Zealand would see your website load slower than a visitor from France does. To reduce this problem, make the most of CDNs. CDNs spread your content on multiple servers across the globe thereby cutting down the time it takes for your site to load for remote visitors.

3.Enable Browser Caching

Browser caching employs similar logic to CDNs except for this time, pages are stored on the visitor’s device. When you enable browser caching on your site, downloadable elements of your site are saved in the visitor’s browser.

That way, when they next visit your website, only the things on your site that have changed will be downloaded while everything else will simply be retrieved from local storage. Browser caching speeds up load times not just by making your website available faster on the user’s screen but also by reducing the amount of network bandwidth your website requires.

4.Get Rid of Superfluous Plugins

Plugins increase website functionality and drive customization. However, there’s such a thing as too many plugins, especially where website performance is concerned. At some point, the potential benefit you can realize from an additional plugin is not worth the subsequent deterioration in loading speed.

Regularly review the plugins on the site to determine which ones you can do without. List them by order of priority so that if you have to remove any, you start with the ones that are of least importance to your objectives. Also, make sure you are running the latest version of the plugin. Newer versions usually have a faster code and are built for optimal performance with the latest release of your CMS.

5.Choose the Right Host

The things we’ve looked at so far are those that are within your power as a website owner.  However, your website doesn’t exist in a vacuum — there are third parties who can determine performance irrespective of the elements, structure, and configuration of your site. None of these is more influential than your hosting service provider.

A wrong choice of web host can make your site as much as 30 times slower. Good web hosts invest in the right hardware and software infrastructure to deliver quality service to customers. This includes not just making sure they provide adequate disk and RAM space but also installing security software such as firewalls and data loss prevention tools. Take time and research different web hosts before you settle for one.

Invest in the time and resources you need to make sure your website loads fast. Your site’s success depends on it.

Is Your Job Under Threat From Technology?

Once upon a time, it was the stuff of science fiction. The dystopian worlds of writers like Asimov and Ballard envisioned a time when many human occupations would be made redundant, replaced by technology. But, unlike travel by jet pack and a colony on the moon, this does seem like a prediction that could well come to pass in our lifetime. Incredible advances in computing and artificial intelligence led to a 2017 report that predicted the eventual loss of 800 million jobs worldwide due to automation. These far-reaching effects will impact society just as the individuals forced out of making an honest living.

But which jobs are immediately under threat from the development of AI and other technological advances?

Insurance underwriter

The rise of aggregator websites was just the start of an industry-wide shake-up. By putting individual policies alongside one another, insurers had to drive down prices to be competitive. The quest for efficiency is now going even further, with a number of major insurers investing in automated underwriting services. Feeding in the relevant customer data – volunteered by them, obviously – allows the system to create an instantaneous risk assessment, which insurers can use to quote a price. Removing the human element creates a fully standardised platform that ought to be fairer to prospective policyholders, but at what cost?

Bank staff

The internet has changed the way we do a lot of things. Online shopping baskets, faster delivery of groceries and instant transactions are transforming the way we spend. But managing money has changed too – with 69% of Brits regularly using online banking services in 2018, way up from the 30% recorded before the worldwide financial crisis of 2007-8. Combined with a declining use of cash and increase in electronic payments, the ATM is now most people’s main method of interaction with the banking that they can’t do online. But with around 60 UK bank branches a month closing, our landscape is changing quite rapidly – as are the prospects of bank managers.

Financial adviser

For those of us who put our money prospects in the hands of a financial adviser, the future could be very different indeed. More and more financial institutions are starting to introduce so-called ‘roboadvice’. These fully automated systems make calculations based on an individual’s attitude to risk, their investment amount and overall goals, and automatically makes those investments on their behalf. The kicker for companies like Nutmeg, who claim to currently carry millions of pounds of investors’ money, is that their services can be levied for a fraction of the fees of their human colleagues. While we’re not exactly clamouring to have our money handled by robots right now, in an especially sensitive time for the financial market, the technology is nonetheless an astonishing example of our innovation.

Builder

Not even the construction industry is safe from the march of automation. And the forward-thinking UK looks set to welcome it with open arms. Huge housing shortages plus increasing demand for workers equals a big opportunity for developers. Specific jobs under threat include bricklayers – who can normally lay up to 400 bricks per day – as machines like SAM are being developed that can increase productivity by three to five times. Similarly threatened are crane operators and digger drivers, who are increasingly being replaced by AI-operated machinery.

Casino dealer

It may seem like an unlikely job for widescale replacement, but the huge growth of online casinos means there’s a real possibility that an important part of the playing process could one day be automated. Many gamblers are already enjoying casino games through the use of machines, but could we see the human element disappear altogether? A clear argument against removing humans from casino games is the qualities they bring that robots cannot. Many consider a huge part of visiting a casino, either land-based or online, is the intimate feeling of being greeted by a real person. In fact, online casinos appear to be going in the opposite direction. They have made the move away from a reliance on machines and their impressive offering of live casino with real dealers is attracting a lot of interest. The live casino games are all hosted by a fully qualified croupier who plays in real time, all thanks to a clever device which converts the action to digital information. So, it appears casinos will continue to use technology to their advantage, but croupier’s jobs look safe, for now.

Taxi driver

With limited tests in busy cities so far proving successful – if not completely incident-free – there’s been a great deal of talk about driver-less cars in recent times. In Singapore there are already at least a dozen on the road, so it won’t be long before they start to appear on the roads worldwide. Of course, it’s not just taxi drivers who will be affected. Anyone who makes a living from being behind the wheel – from bus drivers to long-distance lorry drivers – could see themselves being reduced to pedestrians someday soon.

Manufacturing worker

First, the West saw huge numbers of its manufacturing jobs heading out to the Far East – where labour costs are considerably cheaper. And now, even in China, many of those jobs are being replaced by robots who can make things more quickly, accurately and cheaply. In one of the biggest replacement exercises seen to date, Foxconn, a manufacturer responsible for making many high-tech items from iPhones to Xboxes, is recently reported to have replaced 60,000 workers with robots.

Journalist

One might have thought that the power of the written word, and the insight required to string them together in many meaningful ways, might make it safe from automation. But in a world where more and more journalism is online and the decline of print, there are already AI programmes that can take in information and convert it into basic news stories. These can even be altered to adopt a particular tone of voice for different sites and audiences. A piece of poetry recently submitted by Thomson Reuters Research took first prize in the Turing Test – fooling a panel of experts into thinking it had been created by a human, when in fact it was created by software.

Actor / Screenwriter

No cinema-goer will have failed to notice the huge effect that CGI has had on the industry in recent years. But the ability to generate strange new worlds and mind-boggling special effects is going further than ever. Since the late Peter Cushing reprised his role as Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One – a full 22 years after his death – it’s been predicted that computer-generated actors will soon be appearing in even more major roles.

As to the films in which they’ll appear, we got a sneak preview of the potential future of Hollywood screenwriting with the sci-fi short, Sunspring. Starring Silicon Valley’s Thomas Middleditch, the ten-minute film is comprised entirely of AI-generated dialogue and stage direction. Which explains…well, all of it.

So what does this all mean for the future? Will we be able to enjoy more leisure time and leave it to the machines to generate the wealth to support us? Or will there be huge competition for the real jobs still available? It’s something that no-one seems to have an answer to at the moment so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Scientists Finally Discover Why High Altitude Inhibits Heart Function

It’s no secret that high altitudes reduce the amount of blood that’s able to be pumped around the body. However, what we’ve not known, until now, is why. While many theories have been proposed over the years, none have been confirmed for certain. But new research published in The Journal of Physiology has revealed exactly why this is.

The answer lies in oxygen. At high altitudes, (anything over around 3000 m) oxygen levels in the air are sparse. Because of this, the amount of blood within the body decreases while the blood pressure in the lungs increases. The study has revealed that both of these factors play a part in lowering the amount of blood the heart is able to pump with every beat. Thankfully, none seem to affect our ability to exercise fully.

This kind of research is extremely important as it deepens our understanding of how the human body adjusts to cope when in high altitudes. It will also help in making mountain climbing and other high altitude sports safer.

The research involved gathering data on how the heart and pulmonary blood vessels are able to adapt in a world where less oxygen is present and was conducted by the Cardiff Metropolitan University in collaboration with the University of British Columbia and Loma Linda University School of Medicine.

While the study was small in size, it’s of no less significance than research that’s carried out globally. It just means that because only Europeans were tested, the results are inconclusive and could be different for people of other descents. But luckily future work is imminent.

“Currently, a number of the research team are ready to depart for an expedition that will focus on high altitude natives who live and work in the industrial mines of the Andean mountains,” explains chief investigator on the project, Michael Stembridge. “Unfortunately, a third of these individuals experience long-term ill health due to their residence at high altitude, a condition termed ‘Chronic Mountain Sickness’. We hope to apply the findings of this work to help improve the health and well-being of these populations by furthering our understanding of the condition and exploring therapeutic targets.”

Best Tips to Find Top Casino Sites in the UK

The UK Casino market offers an incredible choice of casino sites that provide an opportunity for players to gamble through a reliable, licensed, and secure platform. Despite the variety of options, the industry is also home to numerous scams, bogus operators, and suspicious casinos that seek to make insane profits from unsuspecting players. In the modern era of casino apps and instant-play software, gambling establishments in the UK are facing increased competition from international operators, especially those that are based in the Caribbean, Asia, the US, and other parts of the world.

To find the best UK casino sites, players must ensure that they go through different casino reviews to gain a comprehensive idea about the options that are available in the market. Browsing through the UK’s leading casino comparison site should also help you in comparing different providers within a standard set of parameters, thereby getting more in-depth details about the best option that is suited to a specific requirement. Nevertheless, here are some of the established guidelines for finding a secure real money casino website in the United Kingdom.

Pinpoint Your Exact Gaming Requirements

Every player has a unique set of preferences. Although casinos try to develop their products to suit the modern trends, some casinos may be more compatible with the discerning requirements of some of the players. The casino industry is strongly related to the hospitality industry, which is why casinos try to offer a custom-tailored solution for their high-rollers and VIP players. However, you don’t need to bet millions on the table to get what you prefer; just browse through your options to find a company that satisfies most of your requirements. In most cases, online casinos follow a pre-established template that aims to meet the tastes of most players, but if you feel like you need something extra, you can always get in touch with the customer service department to see if your needs can be accommodated.

Work Only with a Licensed Operator

A licensed and regulated casino is infinitely better than gambling with an unlicensed or unrecognized establishment. In the UK, all gambling institutions are licensed and regulated by the Gambling Commission, but UK players are not bound by any laws to gamble only with UK-regulated casino operators. In fact, players from the UK have the option of choosing any international gaming site, but there is a responsibility on the players to only deal with licensed and reputed organizations. There are several renowned gambling regulatory agencies outside the UK, but whatever your choice may be, always verify the claims of a casino by cross-referencing their licensing information with the official website of the regulatory agency. Casino ranking sites such as bestrealmoneyonlinecasinos.co.uk will always validate the authenticity of a company’s licenses in their reviews, in order to establish the credibility of the companies that they recommend.

Evaluate the Gaming Options, Policies, & Playing T&C

Almost all online casinos offer the standard collection of games such as Roulette, Blackjack, Baccarat, Poker, Slots, and Craps. However, most of these companies also tend to develop new and innovative variations of the existing games, to create an exciting approach to the traditional games that will set them apart from the competition. The playing conditions, rules, game odds, and payout policies differ for each game, as the casino is the final authority regarding the terms and conditions of their gaming platform. From a player’s perspective, you should never trust a casino’s superficial promises, but make it a point to read through all the user terms and conditions before signing up. You must also check up on the fairness of the games and ensure that their gaming AI is properly audited and verified by an independent testing agency.

Analyze the Deposit & Withdrawal Options

The payment options are pretty straightforward for UK players who choose a UK-based company. Regardless, the payment process may become a bit complex for international players, or for UK players who prefer international casinos. In such cases, you must analyze the different payment options that are offered by the company, especially the deposit and withdrawal options that are available through e-wallets, credit/debit cards, and bank transfers. You must also choose an operator that has a reputation of clearing all withdrawals on time, as slow or delayed withdrawals are a sign that the company is facing a few financial difficulties in meeting its debt obligations. Once again, a detailed casino review can help in learning more about a casino’s payout policies.

Check Whether the Casino is Committed to Customer Satisfaction

A genuinely reliable company will always place priority on its customers, by ensuring that their customer satisfaction levels are always at their peak. You must be able to contact the customer service team or your account manager at all times, not only if you encounter problems, but also for any other support that might help you in improving your gaming experience. A web-based casino is a 24X7 operation, which means that the company must also have an around-the-clock customer support team to address clients’ concerns.

Receiving Incentives such as Bonuses & Other Promotions

While casinos have been traditionally known to offer massive bonuses to their players, recent clampdowns on bonuses have forced companies to reconsider their promotional policies and marketing strategies. A majority of leading gaming licensing agencies have introduced several new policies to deter companies from taking undue advantage of the players by way of stringent promotional T&C. Therefore, most modern online casinos will outline their bonus terms and conditions at the time of signing up, which should help you to stay clear of any unfavorable playing conditions.
