New York and California Want the Backdoor Key to Our Smart Devices

The battle between companies and the government still continues. New York State Introduced a bill last summer that requires smart device manufacturers to open a backdoor or they will face fines. And now one other politician from California has the same idea. Bill in California, which introduces, says; smart device manufacturers should give the government an open door for the smartphones after January 2017. If not, manufacturers will pay $2,500 fee per phone. Of course this bill only for the smart devices which sold in California State.

Which Country Does Adversely Affect The World’s Climate Mostly?

Berkeley Laboratory USA and Potsdam Institute Germany conducted in partnership to study the contribution of adverse effects on the world climate visualized by countries and regions. One of the most striking detail of the results is that people, devices and methods are responsible for two-thirds of the global warming.

The past century has seen a 0.8°C (1.4°F) increase in global average temperature, and according to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the amazing source of this growth has been emissions of greenhouse gases and other pollutants from human activities. Scientists have also observed that many of Earth’s glaciers, ecosystems and other systems are already being impacted by rising regional temperatures and altered rainfall amounts and patterns.

What remains unclear is precise what fraction of the observed changes in these climate-sensitive systems can confidently be attributed to human-related influences, rather than mere natural regional fluctuations in climate. So Gerrit Hansen of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research in Germany and Dáithí Stone of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) developed and applied a novel methodology for answering this challenging question. Their work was published in Nature Climate Change on December 21, 2015.

Their PC modeling-based study concentrated on various particular regional impacts around the world identified in the last IPCC report (such as vanishing glaciers and snow ice in Europe, changes in terrestrial ecosystems in Asia, wildfires in the state of Alaska, etc.).  The IPCC report listed over 100 such impacts of various kinds in different regions across the globe. The Hansen-Stone study focused on the regional climate trends relevant to these effects over the 40-year period 1971-2010.

Using a sophisticated algorithm, the study necessarily required satisfaction of three distinct types of tests.  First, the algorithm assessed the adequacy of the available climate data—the so-called observational record—related to the particular regional impact over the 40-year period.  Was the data sufficient to provide a basis for understanding what had been taking place?  Next, the algorithm determined whether the climate models the researchers used provided sufficient resolution or detail concerning regional climate so as to be considered an appropriate source of knowledge.  Finally, the researchers examined collections of model simulations with and without human emissions factored in to understand to what degree human emissions were responsible for a given impact, by comparing these simulations against observed trends.

Which Technology Companies Would You Like to Work?

Technology companies are now seen as one of an ideal place to work for many people. For this long preliminary interviews, phone calls, online forms and tests, a series of face to face interviews and sometimes you pass the written exam, and you have to get an approval of all. These processes take weeks, even months in some companies. Reuben Jonathan from Getvoip.com carefully examined this issue.

Searching for a job can be a long and daunting task. You have to research companies, edit your resume, and carefully craft cover letters. Even then, according to Interview Success Formula’s 2013 study, you only have a 20% chance of actually getting an interview. And once you get an interview, the hiring process is much longer than in the past. The job interview process has increased nearly 17% since 2010 according to Glassdoor. On average, it now takes 22.9 days, up from 19.6.

After reading these studies, we wanted to learn how the job hiring processes of major companies stacked up. To find out, we looked at hundreds of reviews on Glassdoor from software engineers who applied to thirteen popular tech firms. We identified trends in the interview processes and calculated the average length of time interviews took at each company.

In addition to analyzing the hiring process, we also looked at the interviewee’s experience. Was it positive or negative? Hard or easy?Interview-Process-1-815 × 1337

It turns out; an easy interview process did not always correlate with a positive interview experience and a challenging interview process didn’t always connect with a negative experience. For example, Twitter’s interview process was moderate (3.1/5.0), but an overwhelming about of interviewees (42%) had a negative experience. Conversely, Google had the hardest process (3.4/5.0), but only 15% of people had a negative experience, and 56% of people had a positive experience.

The interview process itself, on average, ranged from two weeks to four weeks. Surprisingly, the length of time the process took did not seem to influence an interviewee’s experience. While Cisco, Yahoo, and Uber had the shortest interview process of two weeks, only interviewees at Cisco had an overwhelmingly positive interview experience.

The chart below shows the interview process at fifteen popular tech companies. Interview methods include phone screens with HR and recruiters, technical phone interviews, online tests and projects, Skype calls, and on-site interviews. As we did not have sufficient data to measure the time between each step in the interview process, we spaced each step equally.

Although this data is specific to software engineers, we believe that it still exemplifies how the hiring process in many industries goes beyond just the traditional phone call and in-person interview. Today, there are multiple rounds of phone/Skype screenings and test projects before you even qualify for an onsite interview. The visualizations above give you an idea of just how intensive the hiring process can get, but don’t let the process discourage you.

Though the job hiring process may seem intimidating, there are plenty of resources available that can help you ace an interview. As our data shows, a little research can help you understand a company’s hiring process and zero in on the types of questions they will ask you. To further understand the company you’re interviewing with, follow them on social media and read their blog. You’ll be able to get a feel for the company’s values, as well as how they approach problems and highlight successes. Finally, you should look at Glassdoor reviews to better understand a company’s particular interview process, as well as get a feel for the types of questions that they’ll ask.
