Stem Cells Researchers Are on The Way to Finding the Cure of Blindness

Stem cell research is still in its infancy, yet there are promising results from two international teams who appear to be well on the way to finding a way to cure blindness. Adult stem cells have been used, and each team has found that parts of the eyes have been regenerated.

One of the teams is based at Cardiff University in the UK and the Japanese Osaka University. Lab rabbits were used, and they had induced blindness. The other team was made up of the Shiley Eye Institute, San Diego School of Medicine and University of California, plus Chines colleagues and they created lens cells, and this restored sight to infants who had congenital cataracts. Nature journal has recently published both sets of results.

The first team used pluripotent cells, and they took them from a human and got them to a state where they can become various other cells. This research tops other ones as they have managed to create conjunctive, cornea and lens and the research on the rabbits showed that stem cells can appear to be a lens, cornea, and retina according to Cardiff University’s Andrew Quantock.

The second team managed to cure blindness in a human. Endogenous cells were used, and they are already in place. LECs will continue to produce lens cells during the lifespan. The trials prevented the need for surgery on the infants who were treated, and no artificial lens was needed. Healing was quick; there were less inflammation and post op.

United Airlines Will Start Using BioFuels Between LA and San Francisco

United Airlines will launch a new initiative by using biofuels for flights between LA and San Francisco. This fuel has not been used for commercial flights before, and it will be supplied by AltAir Fuels. United are going to purchase 15 million gallons of the fuel over a period of three years.  There will be a 30/70 percent mix with biofuel being 30%.

Renewable fuels will use animal or plant matter instead of oil and here the Honeywell UOP technology uses various items including algae and cooking oil. A DARPA grant in 2007 allowed the work to begin and at present, they can produce jet fuel that replaces 50% of petrol commonly used. An up to 80% reduction in greenhouse gas is expected.

United’s MD Angela Foster-Rice sees this as a long-term investment and will provide clean energy jobs into the bargain. This announcement, however, is that there is controversy surround carbon emissions. Corn-based ethanol is used in gasoline production and the amount needed to meet standards has been increased, and there have been arguments about this subject for some years. Discussions regarding reducing emissions are ongoing.

The aviation industry is at risk of increasing emissions of action is not taken, and planes are not easy to power with electricity, and there are no plans to chance this in the near future. Fulcrum Bioenergy are also involved in trying to get fuel from household waste, and this means 90 million gallons of renewable fuel available to United each year.=

The BigBelly; Solar Powered, Wi-Fi Enabled Trash Can

Who ever thought that trash bins could consume the trash dumped in them? Well, Leon Hayes, the originator and manager of Solar Bins Australia, has made this dream a reality. After discovering how seriously neglected the local garbage industry is, and that waste management hasn’t changed much, Leon Hayes had to do something.

According to Hayes, waste bins of any size, including the 240-liter bin, were so neglected that no one noticed when they were full and needed to be picked.

It is this problem that the Haye’s BigBelly Solar Bins sought to eliminate. Mr. Hayes innovative idea is the one that brought Australia’s waste handling into the current century. Queensland’s Noosa Head will receive its first trial self-compacting bins this week. However, twenty-three regions across the nation are already using them.

Joe Jurisevic, Noosa Shire Councillor, spoke of how the BigBelly big would minimise the number of times the trash vehicles would run the Hastings Street. Additionally, Jurisevic said that this bin can be converted into Wi-Fi spots, allowing the garbage collector to see how much waste is in the bin and when it will be ready for collection.

The BigBelly; Solar Powered, Wi-Fi Enabled Trash Can

Although Jurisevic agrees that the BigBelly idea will reduce employment, he notes that it is a very inventive step for Noosa. Moreover, he admits that the initial cost of deploying the bins might be big but he believes that it will all be recovered over the lifespan of the bin.

This waste bin will reduce the waste collection cycles.

So far the truck collections are just once or twice a week, a reduction from seven to ten collections per week. Fewer trucks on the road mean that fewer carbon emissions are being generated and less gasoline is being spent. Tony Haslam, Noosa Integrated Catchment Association president, is among the many environmentalists who have embraced the new technology.

Drones Will Have More Than One Hour Flight Time With This New Miniature Fuel Cells

Drones could be delivering parcels and looking for missing people but flight times are limiting their use. Additional batteries would affect the weight allowing less cargo, but Pohang University has formed a small fuel cell allowing an hour flight and could be used for things such as cars and phones in the future.

Professor Gyeong Man Choi and Kun Joong Kim are the developers and uses stainless steel along with a thin electrolyte and uses tapes casting lamination co-firing. Improvements are being made thanks to the recognition that silicon degraded, and stainless steel is being used to overcome this.

These third generation cells do not corrode and have a peak power of 560Mw at 550 centigrades. It is this level of reliability that means it will also be possible to put the batteries into other items such as smartphones and even some laptops. They are small cells measuring just 78mm square and are believed to switch on and off as quickly as lithium-ion batteries. Smartphones could run on a single charge in a week.

Hydrogen – wet H2 gas – and H20 are used as fuel to produce electricity. The electrolyte is in the form of solid oxide and negative oxygen ions diffuse to the anode, and the fuel is oxidised as a result. This way electrons are formed.

At present, this is still in the development phase, but there is the strong hope and belief that the work carried out so far is going to lead to more powerful cells becoming available and at the same time costs reducing.

Scientists Successfully Manage to Grow Peas, Tomatoes and Radishes in simulated Martian Soil

Moon and Martian soil substitutes have been used to grow crops and recently have had some success. The Dutch-based research centre Wageningen University found the results the same as when compost was used. NASA provided the stimulants and got the Mars soil from a volcano in Hawaii and the moon soil is from the Arizona desert.

When used in isolation, the stimulants did not sustain the plants, but later with manure and grass cuttings added ten crops including leeks, rye, cress and chives and a greenhouse used. The products that grew successfully were rye, peas, tomato, radish, rocket and cress, and the amount equalled that grown in compost. Dr Wieger Wamelink was pleased that there was not a lot of difference in the quantity produced.

The results show that will be proper treatment, and there are promising signs, but also problems to overcome. The main issue is some metals in the foodstuff as a result of the makeup of the soil and this includes mercury and lead. The hope is to serve eventually a “Martian Meal” minus the metal to the people who are involved in the project.

This is why there is going to be the third round of studies and they will begin in the spring. The food could not be eaten with the amount of metal that is currently present and that is why it has to be removed. It will be a great treat when the participants are eventually able to sit down and eat their treat.

What Does Miracle Water Do? That Japanese People Obsessed With

Have you heard about the newest miracle water? This is water that has been filled with gas. Admittedly this sounds like another of the many marketing gimmicks we have heard before. It is about the hydrogen water, designed for drinking and bathing. It is driving the Japanese people crazy. While hydrogen water is nothing new to the Japanese, it is the hottest product from HFactor they cannot resist.

HFactor, the pioneer of hydrogen water in the U.S, says that its product does more than quenching the thirst.  According to them, it boosts recovery after working out, promotes blood circulation, increases energy, offers antioxidants, suppresses eczema and minimizes allergies. But how is HFactor’s product different from tap water?

Joel Schlessinger, a dermatologist, explains that hydrogen plays the role of an antioxidant in the human body. Hence, hydrogen reduces inflammation and damage to cells. While hydrogen water is famous in Japan, because it is antioxidant-rich, Joel thinks that there is very little research available to demonstrate how it alters the body positively in the long-term.

Joel, however, agrees that two former studies had found a connection between drinking hydrogen-infused water and handling diabetes better. In those studies, participants reported a decrease in cholesterol, yet Dr. Joel Schlessingers insists that more research on this topic is needed.

What Does Japanese Miracle Water Do?

Marra St. Clair, the Project Juice Co-founder and a qualified nutritionist, confirms that hydrogen water boosts recuperation of the body after enduring intense exercise. This, he believes, could be because hydrogen is an antioxidant that blocks oxidative stress. When training intensely, severe muscle contractions occur. These cause oxidative stress, which triggers fatigue and inflammation.  On the cellular level, hydrogen water hydrates the body, boosts circulation and increases energy. Marra confirms this fact.

However, Joel Schlessinger does not believe the claim that hydrogen water clears eczema.

HFactor’s water tastes great, of course, and it is the result of two years of acute development of the company’s own natural system for adding hydrogen gas to pure water.

Hyperloop Makes More Sense Than Ever

California is struggling to set up the high-speed rail that was hoped for but thanks to the Hyperloop – a concept by Elon Musk – it could happen.  The LA Times reported that funding issues mean there is going to be a three years delay plus issues faced when it comes to the mountains of Southern California. Despite this, the central valley leg could be finished by 2025.

Hyperloop will be working somewhere around the world as soon as 2020 according to Chairman of Hyperloop Technologies Shervin Pishevar. He told CNBC that speeds of 700 miles an hour are expected, and this will have a knock-on effect on the global economy.

It is only three years since Musk’s white paper moving pods along closed pneumatic tubes at very high speeds. The test track being built in Nevada means there are hopes of speeds of 0-335 miles in a couple of seconds.

Hyperloop should be available first, but the less speedy bullet train has an advantage – the right to land that allows them to join in large areas. The project seems more suitable for public funding especially against high-speed rail, due to the amount of rules and regulations involved.

Musk has crowd funders interested in the competition to develop the pod, and as tests have taken place, some have been chosen for testing. Reddit are involved, and the SpaceX HQ has a one-mile testing track. Hyperloop has a place in the future of rail travel, especially about cargo. A bullet train may travel in California by 2025.

Audi is Ready to Take the Risks to Become The Tesla Killer

Tesla has not always been as popular as they are now and are no longer just considered to be the newcomer from California. Now electric cars are coming to the fore; they are becoming more successful, and the ideas promoted by Elon Musk are making them a force to be reckoned with and they are providing competition for Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi.

The risks taken have inspired Audi, and Stefan Knirsch and the technical leader has said that Audi will be taking things more slowly than Tesla when it comes to bringing out new models.

Volkswagen boss Matthias Muller also believes that Tesla is the brand to follow and that they have been doing things the right way. Knirsch does not fully agree and thinks that the lead made by Tesla among others and move more quickly, take some risks and bring innovation to the industry.

Audi is Ready to Take the Risks Against Tesla

He does accept that the American firm has become a little more conservative recently and is managing to cut down on costs and building more, as well as keeping an eye on profit and upgrading the manufacturing facilities.

There has been a change of thought on the side of Tesla according to Knirsch, but their very presence has had a significant impact on Audi and the way they operate. The plan is to produce a family car that can run in just 15 minutes of charging. For this, it will travel just over 300 miles, and the cost will not be more than the petrol run version.

Future of Farming May Live Inside This Container

Farming could be heading back to the way it was 200 years ago according to Brad McNamara CEO of Freight Farms. Food will be local and people will get to accept that their food will not have travelled around the world before it reaches them,  the people expected to get involved will be former vets, those who have already retired and husband and wife partnerships.

Innovation is becoming the norm in farming, and there are crops of companies who are managing to bring fresh, and sustainable produce to the population. North Carolina is represented by CropBox while Dallas has Growtainers and Atlanta PodPonics. While customers are buying what produces, companies will continue to provide it.

There is only about an acre of farmland being used in each case and the containers used to grow the food have been described as a hydroponic farm. This is the description provided by David Schmitz, who owns such a freight farm based in Stony Brook University Long Island New York.

Items are going straight to the school café as around 800 lettuce find their way in and this happens all year round, with just 10% of the ordinary water that would be needed for regular farming. No soil is involved, and there are no pesticides. Schmitz believes around 1000 students a week uses the produce.

McNamara explains how the containers cost so much less than a greenhouse and running costs are much lower than for a conventional farm. It is hoped this will bring more people into farming.
