Solar Energy Will Dominate Energy Within 12 Years

During a medical technology symposium, Ray Kurzweil claimed that solar energy generation might become the most popular power type in the next one decade or over. His statement is hard to accept, though, as currently solar energy represents only two percent of global power supplies. However, Ray’s prediction might be true based on the fact that solar energy has been incredibly popular in the past twenty years.

According to Solar Power World, Ray Kurzweil’s crucial view was that no matter how small, solar has started to increase its market share two times every twenty-four months. Hence, the two percent mentioned above is an increase from only zero-point-five in 2012.

Kurzweil’s basic point, as reported by Solar Power World, was that while solar is still tiny, it has begun to reliably double its market share every two years—today’s 2% share is up from just 0.5% in 2012.

The Get Data Sheet, in Fortunes technology newsletter, shows how several analysts expand growth linearly. And the conclusion is that we will notice a 0.5 percent annual growth in solar market share, and this will cause a twelve percent increase in twenty years. But Kurzweil’s Law of Accelerating Returns is entirely left out in the linear analysis. The law is interpreted this way: the more new technology options get tinier and cheaper, their development will become exponential.

So he suggests studying the growth rate of solar power regarding how the solar market is doubling every twenty-four months rather a year over year percentage. Hence, if the current two percent share doubles every 24 months, solar should have attained one hundred percent market share in twelve years.

Technically, this implies that solar will have attained up to one hundred and twenty-eight percent of market share in twelve years. In the real world, though, Ray Kurzweil’s projections are subject to discussion. Since fossil fuel producers are not collapsing anytime soon, it is highly unlikely that solar will achieve even one hundred percent.

However, fossil fuel major producer dismiss Kurzweil’s point at their risk. This is the same man who predicted cloud computing, wearable tech and mobile internet almost twenty years back using his Law of Accelerating Returns.

Elon Musk Explains Future Plans of Tesla

Not many people could look back ten years and see how accurate their predictions were. Elon Musk is not one of these people as he founded Tesla Motors and their electric sports vehicle the Roadster. His aim was to produce many more models and head towards an economy based on solar electric.

Twice as powerful as a Prius and challenging Ferrari and Porsche, the question still asked is regarding the need for another electric sports car. At present, costs are high, but this will change and with Tesla, customers will pay the initial price until volume lowers the price. The family version is already going to be 50% the price of the Roadster, and the battery is not toxic as sometimes stated.

Musk sees his plan in stages – produce sports car and use money raised for an affordable car, then a more affordable car and still aim for zero emissions.

The Roadster may look like a high-performance car, and 86MJ works the battery per 100MJ charged. Even compared to the Prius that is a good figure. At present, the so-called hybrid cars are running on petrol with help from the battery. Oil will still be needed to recharge their batteries as well.

It is not only cars that are being produced to help the environment, as other items will soon be on the market. By using a solar panel from SolarCity, you could glean around 50 miles of electricity each day. Again, Elon Musk is involved in this innovative product.

Artificial Intelligence Helps to Identify Cancer Cells Based on Blood Samples

There is now a technique that links deep learning software and a microscope; it is now easier than ever to pinpoint cancer cells. It can be very difficult to identify cancer purely by using blood samples and while there is an age old system of adding chemicals to the blood to make it easier, it then ruins that sample about any other form of tests. The abnormal structure can be used, and while useful, this takes longer, and it is also possible to identify a healthy cell as one that contains cancer.

There are researchers at the University of California in Los Angeles, are working with a special microscope and an artificial intelligence algorithm that can pick out cancer and not destroy the sample. A cancer diagnosis is now a lot quicker and easier, and therefore the treatment can start more quickly. It is also being seen as an advantage for precision medicine.

The device that invented by UCLA professor uses deep learning and photonic time stretches to analyze 36 million images per second.

The microscope involved is called a photonic time stretch microscope and works by breaking nanosecond long light pulses into lines so that they can be entered into a computer. Once in there, things such as the diameter, and light absorption will be categorized. Images that have been previously analysed will be tested, and this will allow the scientist to pick out the cancerous cells. A computer is also being used to identify them.

During tests, researchers found a 17% improvement in finding cancer and they believe that soon data based diagnosis of cancer is likely.

Greenland is Melting Too Early This Year – Natural Causes or Global Warming?

The ice sheet in Iceland is melting early this year, and as well as there being concerns about the amount, the timing is a worry. It may be a natural occurrence, but the idea that it is another man made problem is not being ruled out. 1.7 million sq. Km shows signs of melting according to the Danish Meteorological Institute ad while this is not entirely new, the speed at which it happened is. Often this will happen around May but not as early as this year, and scientist Peter Langen, who is with the meteorological society, explained that figures had to be checked, and also they needed to accept that this may happen again in the future.

One explanation has been that it was due to the warm air that was trapped above Greenland, and this turned into rain around the coast.  Al Jazeera reported that this could be due to natural causes, but also had to concede that it was likely that there was a man-made element, and things have deteriorated due to climate change.

Meltwater refreezing releases heat into the snow at depth, reducing the amount of heating needed for the melt to start and forming ice layers that can help melt water run off the ice sheet earlier with climate warming.

It is not unknown for this to happen as back in 2012, and it is known that the water will eventually turn back to ice once winter comes. That said, there will be an element of damage caused by the ice according to a representative of the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland Jason Box.

In 100 years 9 trillion metric tons of ice has been lost, and the resultant sea level rise leaves coastal areas vulnerable.

Chornobyl360; An Interactive VR Documentary

The Chernobyl ( or Chornobyl which is Ukrainian transliteration ) disaster was one of the worst nuclear accident in World’s History. The incident occurred on 26 April 1986 in the city of Pripyat which located in the north of the capital of Ukraine, Kiev. The Chornobyl disaster is classified a level 7 event – which is the maximum classification – on the International Nuclear Event Scale. Also, Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster is scaled as a level 7 event, which happened after a big scale earthquake that also cause big tsunamis.

The Chornobyl disaster began during a test run on 26 April 1986, there was an unexpected power surge at the fourth reactor, the scientist tried an emergency shutdown, but a massive spike in power output occurred, which led to a reactor vessel crack and followed by a series of steam explosions. Aftermath fire sent highly radioactive fallout into the atmosphere; the radioactive cloud affected mostly Europe, Russia, and the Middle East.

Many people were evacuated – the day after the incident occurred – from the most severely affected area that called Pripyat. Nearly 50.000 people relocated in days, and the city became a ghost town ever since. For a very long time; it was very dangerous to go to the city but these last years, some companies do touristic visiting to the area. But still, during these tours the guide will warn you about wearing clothes that cover most of your skin and don’t touch anything and don’t even think about getting a souvenir.

But now, there is a new way to take a safer tour of Pripyat and Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant without the risk of getting some radiation. A young team from Ukraine created a high-tech project to show you the story of the Chornobyl with an awesome virtual reality experience. The documentary will be available for VR headsets such as Samsung Gear VRs, Oculus Rift ( Oculus Windows app ), Google Cardboards. They also making some apps for smartphones ( Android app ), tablets and desktops to bring you the virtual experience. The team started a KICKSTARTER project, please visit their page to support them and get more detail from the documentary.

Sleeping Immune Cells Can Be ‘Woken Up’ to Fight With the Most Deadly Cancers

Cancer cells are now able to disable the immune cells that are capable of killing them. The switch is meant for much more innocent reasons, such as allowing a child to be carried and now Cancer Research UK scientists are aware of a way to reverse the process and let the system realise that there are cancerous cells present. The immune cells still have a big part to play, but the scientists set the process in motion.

Dr. Sergio Quezada has said that the discovery is an exciting one and that they will be able to attack cancer using just the cells responsible for recognizing and attacking cancer. A biopsy would be taken and by working out which immune cells are present, it will show it to be the ones that were fighting cancer before they were turned off.

The treatment would work by taking a biopsy of a tumour and then identify immune cells that are already inside. Those cells are likely to me most effective as the fact that they are in the tumour suggests they were trying to attack it before they got switched off.

TALEN is then used; this is a technique that genetically edits the cell and the start to multiply. They will then be able to fight cancer effectively and also stop it from coming back. The tests have been carried out on mice and the tumours shrunk by up to 80%. Cancer Research’s Dr. Alan Worsley is excited by the findings and believes they are halting the switching off process. Unlike chemotherapy that works for a small period, this will carry on, and there are already certain drugs of this type already available. The problem is that there are side effects and in some cases the immune system attacks cells that are still healthy.

The Gene Has Been Found, No More Gray Hair

The gene responsible for Gray hair has been found, and there is a suggestion that gray hair could disappear forever. 6,300 people had their genetic data examined by researchers from University College London and discovered genes responsible for many other things regarding body hair – and the loss of it. Kaustubh Adhikari said that this was the largest study carried out so far.

Gene 1RF4 is responsible, and it stores melanin. The color comes from melanocytes and as we age, they become less effective concerning pigmentation and the air becomes gray. Other genes will be responsible for other changes to the hair as we age and Adhikari added that they played their part. However, only one has been named and for the moment is taking all the blame.

The Gene Responsible for Gray Hair Has Been Found, No More Gray Hair
At the top are shown drawings illustrating the seven hair features examined in this study; thick lines connect these features with the candidate genes identified in regions with single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) reaching genome-wide significant association. At the bottom is shown a composite Manhattan plot displaying all significantly associated SNPs for the hair features examined; the rs number of the SNP with the smallest P value appears at the top of each association peak. The next step is to find out how the genes have the influence they do, and that is the next stage of the process. While at present there are products that can cover up the gray, before long, there may not be ay gray to cover up. It could be by altering genes or as the result of a pill, and there will be wide ranging.

The findings were published online today in the journal Nature Communications.

First Time Ever Coal-Fired Plants Provide Less Electricity Than From Photovoltaic Panels

Some people have been surprised that the Government is so involved with the solar power site at the Wiltshire RAF base. British Solar Renewables are part owners, and the state has recently been allowing land to be used for green energy projects.

Recently it was the first time that there was less electricity provided from coal-fired plants than from photovoltaic panels. 17% of the UKs demand came from wind turbines in December and up to April 2016, 25% has been provided. The need to combat global warming is a major factor for new developments. Jeffries Bank analyst Peter Atherton believes that the growth of solar energy recently has been exploded.

For the first time, the sun power panels provided more UK electricity than the coal-fired plants over a full 24-hour period. Just under 30-gigawatt hours which is 4% of national demand.

Solar Energy can be a world beater according to the Economist despite dependency upon the regularity of hot weather and it is 80% cheaper to install solar panels than it was a few years ago. At the turn of the century there was almost no solar industry in Britain but thanks to subsidies, had grown immensely, although by 2016 the industry is expected to chip in more. Around 2,000 jobs have recently been lost, and up to 18,700 more could follow.

According to Leonie Greene of the Solar Trade Association – a lobby group – solar is reliable and can be sent out quickly. She believes that the UK government needs to rethink their views and enable savings to be made on bills. Cost is a big issue, and there is still unhappiness regarding the cutting back of subsidies.

Solar Power in Numbers in the UK;

  • 99% of the UK’s solar photovoltaic capacity has been installed since May 2010.
  • 9.2GW of solar capacity has been installed in the UK, enough to power 2.2 million homes in Britain.
  • 3.6GW of capacity was installed just in 2015.
  • 2.2% of the total power generated in the UK in 2015 was from solar power sources.
  • 49% of the total EU investment in solar panels was made in the UK.
  • It is expected until 2020 13GW of solar panel will be installed in Britain.

A New Humanoid Phone From Sharp; Creepy But Useful

There has been an announcement from Sharp Corp. regarding the launch of a small smartphone that will react to voice commands and can also show movies on a wall. RoBoHon looks like a robot and has a screen that shows it be descended from the cell phone. The company, based in Osaka, has said that as well as the monthly fee of around 980 Yen there will be a purchase cost of 198,000 Yen.

Sharp Executive Yoshisuke Hasegawa explained that there is a vision for the company, and this is to put artificial intelligence into their electronic items. He went on to say that this is the first in the series of products being produced under the name “Kokoro.”

RoBoHon is 19.5cm tall and was designed by Tomotaka Takahashi. It comes with a projector as well as a camera and the 2” touchscreen is used in the same way as a smartphone. Added to this, it can be utilized  just by being spoken to thanks to voice recognition. It has not all been plain sailing as on two occasions there was no reaction while a demonstration was taking place but it was able to both take a picture and read out an email as a result of a voice command.

A sim card can be used so it will be possible to connect to mobile networks and this will incur an additional cost of 650 Yen and 2,280 Yen to receive between 1GB and 5GB of data and the option to add a call plan.

The Invisible Illness ; Traumatic Brain Injury

There has recently been a lot of discussion around former footballers suffering from brain injuries and links are being made to conditions in the sport. A lot retire and find they suffer memory loss, depression and the suicide rate is high.

It is not only football players who suffer brain injuries, and it is found that a traumatic brain injury is a major cause of disability and even death in the United States. A recent figure showed that there are up to 52,000 deaths annually out of the 1.7 million who receive a serious injury. A major question surrounds the outcome for the ones that survive.

The brain is a delicate organ and, unfortunately, it does not take much to knock its chemistry out of alignment. Even though receiving a concussion may be a tiny blip in most people’s memories, the ramifications of the injury can follow them for the rest of their lives.

To be defined as a traumatic brain trauma, there has to be an external injury to the brain, and this can happen in many ways. It could be sport related, or could be as simple as hitting a piece of furniture as the result of a fall. Strokes don’t fall into the same category as this is not caused by something happening to the head but rather something inside the skull.

Percentage wise falls make up 40% of TBIs while 15% were as a result of accidentally being hit by something. Car accidents were 14.3% and assault 10.7%. When the impact occurs the person may lose consciousness, feel dizzy or at worse, become comatose. Other symptoms may seem unusual for the injury and include vomiting and depression.

Possibly the most frightening piece of information is that anyone who has suffered a TBI is three times more likely to kill themselves than another citizen.
