IBM’s New Breakthrough Technology That Fights Viruses

Viral infections are a large challenge for doctors and at times, they mutate to such an extent that it is not possible to cure them with drugs that are already available. Ebola and Zika are a risk to people around the world, but there is some good news. Singapore’s Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology along with IBM Research have found a macromolecule that can use a triple play mechanism and prevent the spread of the most deadly infections.

By studying large multi-featured molecules, they believe the infections can be defeated. IBM Watson along with such breakthroughs that are imminent could bring forward further drug discoveries.

There are several specialised components in the macromolecule, and this results in the triple play action.

  1. Attraction – electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds attract the viruses’ proteins and stop it infecting healthy cells.
  2. Prevention – the sugar Mannose helps fight the infection by attaching to healthy immune cells and allowing then to flow freely.
  3. Neutralisation – the pH in the viral cell can be neutralised therefore stopping it reproducing.

Lead researcher James Hedrick is excited about the events that will come about as a result of this discovery and is hoping that there can be a collaboration with Universities to find more applications yet.

IBM will be able to advance this research yet further and thanks to cognitive computing, should be able to find clinical trials for patients ensuring that more people receive the help that they need.

Dream of Becoming a Pilot? Think Again

The U.S Military is looking to introduce robots to their flying squad in replace of modern day pilots.  They are currently considering funding the huge task of automating all of its existing manned fleets into robot-piloted planes.  The experts confirm that this is a relatively easy process, with no real modifications to the actual aircraft itself, eliminating custom design and integration costs.

As soon as the robot is placed in the cockpit, it immediately uses its vision-based recognition system to read gauges and operate all the other controls just as a human pilot would, operating the yoke and throttle using the same movements.  There are many benefits to having a fully automated pilot system without having to develop new vehicles including the obviously reduced costs and not to mention the invaluable manpower that can now be used in areas of high need.

Although some may feel that the thought of a robot flying a plane may be somewhat daunting. We need to remember that planes are already very much automated, and many commercial pilots actually do very little ‘flying’ during their journey, according to recent studies, and we may be safer in ‘robot hands.’   If the funding were to go ahead, the possibilities and benefits for the Air Force alone are quite significant.  Just in being able to fly autonomous missions without spending time or money rebuilding aircraft is extraordinary, but this shift to robot-piloted planes could also mean a change in the likes of they way we currently see the commercial shipping or transporting humans operate in the near future.

“Electric Mountain” – A Power Station That Hidden Inside a Mountain

Snowdonia hosts some of the most beautiful landscapes Great Britain has to offer.  With its mountainous peaks and breathtaking valleys, these views on offer really are something truly unique.  Among the astonishing scenery in Snowdonia is a village called Llanberis, which lies at the foot of Snowdon, and hosts the innovative ‘Electric Mountain.

Electric Mountain is First Hydro Company’s Visitor centre and is the starting point for the Dinorwig Power Station.  Originally a slate quarry, Dinorwig Power Station took over ten years and £425 million to complete and was opened by Prince Charles in 1984.  The purpose of this gigantic power station is to work as a STOR (Short Term Operating Reserve) and is responsible for providing a fast, short-term response to rapid changes n power demand or sudden loss of power at some stations (most commonly when the kettle gets switched on during the break of your favourite program).

Being free to have a walk on the mountain, (please note it’s quite steep!), Electric Mountain has become a very popular tourist destination, with over 225,00 visitors each year.  It hosts a gift shop, cafe and climbing wall for the youngsters or young at heart!  The tours that are on offer are also something not to be missed.  For a small charge, you are taken on a historical journey for 70 minutes right into the heart of the Dinorwig Power Station and get to experience the vast magnificence of it all.  From the large main inlet valves to the gigantic tunnels, to the history of the station there is something for everyone to take away from this tour.

Electric Mountain is open to the public all year round (with the exception of Christmas) and can also be used as a ‘unique’ meeting venue for businesses.

Tesla’s PowerWall New Rival “Mercedes-Benz’s Home Batteries”

In-home storage units are now being run by the same batteries used in the Mercedes-Benz all electric cars. The idea is similar to the Powerwall developed by Tesla. Daimler AG said that Deutsche ACCUmotive are the manufacturers, and they are being used by solar tech and energy companies. It is the sensible option as they are used alongside solar panels. At present Germany is the only place they are being used but Mercedes have said that they will soon be setting up an international program.

It is not unusual for eight columns to be used together and as each lithium-ion battery has a 2.5kWh capacity, once combined it will reach 20 kWh. Mercedes claim that it will be able to capture leftover solar power, and this can be used at a later date, and very little will be lost.

There is no information regarding the cost at the moment, and this could be due to the fact that there are a number of parts involved including photovoltaic panels. The units have been produced since 2015, and it is possible to scale them, so this accounts for the rapid introduction to the home market. Daimler is putting a lot of trust in the development and has put over $500 million into in additional factory due to open in 2017.

Powerball is more stylish, and multiples can be installed together. It costs $3.500, and there has been a high demand for the product as 38,000 were reserved last year. Daimler will hope to take some of the next orders.

Offshore Drilling Isn’t Slowing Down

The chance of finding fossil fuels in the US Arctic has been accepted as a nonstarter. Royal Dutch Shell has accepted that their 10-year search for oil was not a great success.  It has walked away from all projects except one of the leases it has near to the north-west coast of Alaska.

At the end of 2015, plans for drilling in the Chukchi Sea were stopped and no new plans to start again have been devised. Barack Obama has also stopped new leases and cancelled some in place. This, however, does not mean that drilling offshore is coming to an end.

Work will continue in the Gulf of Mexico and the production of gas and oil there is increasing. With 5,000 or more active gas and oil leases in that area alone and around 70% deep-water drilling, the future seems brighter. The figures have been produced by the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).

BOEM is working on the last details for the 5-year plan it has for leasing areas that will be good for oil production leading up to 2022.  Ten new leases in the Gulf have been proposed, and when it comes to carbon, it is believed to be the worlds’ 8th largest reserve. Unless the President changes the plan, drilling will continue.

It has been asked why drilling is stopping in the Arctic yet expanding in the Gulf. The infrastructure plays a large part alongside the amount of new funds available. The only blot on the landscape is the increase in protesters demanding drilling is stopped.

A New Technique That Allows Embryos to Develop Beyond Implantation Stage for first time

Embryos can develop in vitro after implantation thanks to the research carried out at Cambridge University. This means that the first 13 days after fertilization can be analyzed. As a result, the chances of the success of IVF are significantly improved. After fertilization, the egg divides, and stem cells cluster together and become a blastocyst. There are three cell types, and these will become the placenta, cells allowing organ development and cells that will form the body. Cells must be attached to the uterus within seven days, and if this does not happen, pregnancy will end.

Research couldn’t be carried out in a lab after the 7th day, but now it is 13. Professor Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz, who has been working on mice, found that the re-organization process usually achieved after implantation can be found in a lab providing circumstances are right.

The Professor pointed out that implantation is an important part of the process and is the stage where the body is formed. The research is going to be vital when it comes to finding out what happens during a miscarriage and hopefully will aid prevention. It is a complicated process according to Dr. Marta Shahbazi who is part of the research.

After fertilization, the three main cell types form into a new configuration, and a cavity is produced representing the initial structure of the human embryo post implantation. If the cavity were not there, it wouldn’t be possible for further development. Beforehand it was thought that cells dying caused the cavity but it is understood that this is not the case.

Tesla Aims to build 500,000 Vehicles A Year

Tesla has said that they are expecting to produce around 500,000 vehicles a year, and this is two years earlier than had been imagined. The Model S, Model X and Model 3 are all included. Next year is going to be a vital year for Tesla as the Model S will be updated, and they have confirmed the desire to produce up to 900,000 cars a year.

The announcement was made at the same time that the first quarters’ earnings were released. The results were good, and the stock has risen by 5%. Already there are 325,000 reservations made for the Model 3.

There have been mixed fortunes for Tesla recently as the Model S was unveiled, but also, the Model X had to be called back due to concerns over the seats in the third row. It is not the first time that there have been worries over this model, but it is hoped they will all be rectified. Thanks to the Model S the prices are beginning to look more affordable for the style of car.

Bloomberg has reported that there were a couple of top executives ready to quit the company, and this led to stock dropping down to 4% but thanks to the recent profits and managed to keep the loss per share down to slightly less than what had been expected. They did manage to keep revenue up at $1.6 billion, and that was the figure that had been hoped for.

The Light-Emitting That Could Illuminate Roads and Homes At Night

Jose Carlos Rubio has created a cement that can emit light; therefore, roads can be lit without electricity. The Professor from the Michoacan’s University of San Nicolas believes that the light will emit for 100 years. He began nine years ago, and his main problem revolved around the fact that cement is opaque.

Cement dissolves in water the same way that effervescent tablets do, and the crucial point is when it becomes a gel. It is resistant and strong, and small flakes appear. To be successful, he realised that he would need to change the infrastructure so that it was only a gel. This way it would be able to absorb solar energy and send it back into the environment as light.

The Dark Cement That Could Illuminate Roads At Night

The Dark Cement That Could Illuminate Roads At Night

In 2015, there was 44 billion tons of cement produced globally, so there is going to be a market for the product. While it is light, the cement will take in solar energy, and there should be enough for the structure to provide light through 12 hours of darkness.

A major advantage is the fact that cement does not corrode in the way that other materials do, so it remains usable for 100 years. Most items currently used will last about three years before giving into UV rays.

It is also ecological, and at present can only be produced in green or blue. The intensity of light can be managed so drivers will not be dazzled by it. Other countries are noting the developments and in the UK, it has been recognised by the Newton Fund.

Analysts Do not Believe that Tesla Can Produce 500,000 Vehicles until 2018

News had come out of New York claiming that Tesla is going produce 500,000 vehicles as early as 2018 when it was considered to be 2020 before this figure would be hit. Analysts at Barclays, however, are being critical of the suggestions and do not believe that it will happen. They accept that there is a great desire on the part of Tesla to be the best in class car provider, there have been a number of manufacturing problems pinpointed, and this is for the S as well as the X. Volume is expected to go up, there is likely to be a raft of problems, including delays to the release dates and inefficiencies once the cars are actually for sale.

Analysts Do not Believe that Tesla Can Produce 500,000 Vehicles until 2018

The company that is based in Palo Alto, California could find that they do not have sufficient cash to make the vehicles, and there are already challenges being made when it comes to the margins with the Model 3. It is accepted that Tesla is going to be expanding over the next decade, but it will be at the expense of suppressed margins as well as challenging cash flow say, analysts.

Portfolio Manager at Action Alerts Plus – a charitable trust – is also unsure about the figures for 2018 believing that 200,000 is a more sensible figure to aim for. The Street Ratings show Tesla to be D+, and this is due to high risk, poor return on equity and a poor growth when it comes to shares.
