After Volkswagen, Nissan May Be Set to Receive Fine For Manipulated Emissions Figures

Nissan may soon be following in Mitsubishi and Volkswagen’s footsteps as it jumps into the limelight following investigations on manipulated emissions figures. Investigations commenced into the allegations last December following the Volkswagen scandal. The only vehicle model so far that appears to have been affected is the ever popular Nissan Qashqai. This is a massive disappointment for Nissan, who will now face the headache of having hundreds of vehicles recalled due to this data manipulation.

Recent tests carried out by the industry experts revealed the clear manipulation of data. They explained how when tested the Nissan Qashqai’s emission reduction device automatically cuts off when the car’s temperature reaches 35 degrees (to stop the vehicle overheating), but other cars wait until the temperature reaches 50 degrees before switching off the device. This is not following in line with the industry standard, and Nissan may suffer because of this.

Although Nissan still denies any manipulation, all the industry experts are claiming otherwise, and the fine they are due to receive will be 300 million won is equivalent to approximately $280,000. However, considering that Nissan offered Mitsubishi £2.2 billion for 34 percent of its shares very recently, I don’t think they will have too much of a problem paying. It ‘s hard to predict if this will have a long-term effect on Nissan as the second largest automaker in Japan as they are still very adamant they have not employed any illegal defeat or cheat devices. I guess only time will tell.

ARES – Commercial-Scale Rail Energy Storage

ARES are a company that are committed to providing energy storage technology on a wide scale and have just been given approval by the Bureau of Land Management to launch a new project called ARES. ARES stands for Advanced Rail Energy Storage, and their purpose is to assist the electric grid and compensate in times of need when supplies are running low, and store excess supplies when required.

The way in which ARES approach the issue of balancing energy supplies is different to that of the Elon Musk peddles, pumped hydroelectric facilities or moving compressed air underneath the ground. Their method involves taking over 106 acres of Nevada and running a low-cost power to drive train to generate and store electricity as and when required. It will work when the local utility has excess electricity. When this occurs the electric motor fires up the train, and it steams up the 2,000-foot hill ahead of it. When there is a deficit in electricity, the train bolts back down the hill and generates the electricity needed via braking.

ARES - Commercial-Scale Rail Energy Storage

Although the whole project is based on energy saving, it is still a very expensive task to complete, with the new energy storage system costing a whopping $55 million. As with all new major projects, ARES do have a mountain ahead of them in ensuring they can achieve all they have set out to do, but once they do, there will be no stopping them!

Apple Joins Autonomous Vehicle Land Rush

Apple is looking for an R and D base and has taken an interest in an 800,000 square foot piece of land suitable for carrying out Project Titan. Victor Coleman CEO of Hudson Pacific Properties explained that technical and automobile companies want space in Silicon Valley to carry out tests on autonomous cars. Companies such as Tesla, BMW, Ford, and Mercedes are all looking for new additional locations, and this is from the likes of Google take ownership of a 400,000square foot location that they have been showing an interest in.

Investment is increasing on a regular basis, and it is at a time when there is the embracing of various forms of automation by some automotive organisations. Tesla is one company that enabled automatic lane switching and as soon as possible after 2018, Ford want to introduce auto-parking into the cars that they produce. The additional R and D testing could lead to the government agreeing to quicker approval for autonomous vehicles. It will also be the chance for Apple and Google to test out cars they are producing in what is a totally controlled environment.

It is accepted that 800,000 square feet is not a massive plot, but is big enough for requirements. Apple has 2.8 million sq ft for the Campus 2 and despite already having 100 autonomous cars in use, Alphabet is looking for a further 400,000 square feet.

Probes of NASA Witness Powerful Magnetic Storms Near Earth

Satellites can be damaged by powerful magnetic storms to say nothing of harming astronauts and spaceships. A NASA vessel has now seen how this happens. The knowledge can help with the design of nuclear reactors. MMS Investigator Roy Torbert believes they have hit the jackpot and have now carried out experiments in the environment.

The most abundant form of matter in the universe is plasma. About 1/6th of this is ordinary matter while the rest is dark matter. Plasmas can be permeated by magnetic field lines and one differently oriented lines encounter one another, they can collide, then break before reconnecting to turn magnetic energy into kinetic energy and heat.

The spacecraft have made the first-ever detection of a magnetic reconnection, an explosive energy burst, between the magnetic fields of Earth and the sun.

It is like trains switching tracks and colliding according to James Drake of the University of Maryland. The crash will send out energy at the point of reconnection, and it will be sent out fiercely.

The reconnection is a speedy event and electrons, and protons are shot out. Past research has shown how protons move during reconnection, but thanks to MMS direct measurements of the movement of electrons has been captured.

There have been theories surrounding this for many years, but knowing is so much better. Data collected has shown that the magnetic field has fallen to nearly zero, with electrons being accelerated and ions flowing in other directions. All of this led to the belief that the spacecraft involved had gone into a region of electron dissipation. There was a spike in the generation of electric power brought about by the electrons, and this happened at reconnection.

Anvil 3D Printer – Brilliant Technology at a Low Cost!

We have all heard of 3D printing by now, and a few of us lucky ones may already have one in our homes or know someone who does.  For the rest of us, it is still very much an item on our ‘wish list’, with the average price for a good 3D printer still around $700.  There are some around that are much less than this, but you then jeopardise the quality of both the printer and the items it will produce as well as how user-friendly the printer is to operate.

However, that could all be set to change with the introduction of Anvil’s new 3D printer that is currently being marketed on Kickstarter. This new product could change the way in which 3D printers are used as we know them.  No longer will we only have to hear about one person in each town owning a 3D printer, but we could all have one as just another household appliance.!

Solar Panels; How They Convert Light Into Electricity

For many of us, it may seem magical to be able to capture energy from the sun and produce electricity.  Thanks to the photovoltaic effect, one form of energy can be turned into another. Due to the immense heat from the sun, the planet is warm, and some energy can become electricity. Solar panels convert solar energy into electrical energy.

So how does it work? Light hits an atom, and in some cases can let the electron be free from the atom, and it moves inside the crystal structure. With two layers you can provide electricity. Only a small amount comes from each solar cell, so they need to be connected together. With a roof full of cells, the entire house can be powered. There are a few hurdles to overcome, as the current produced is different from the one needed. Solar panels generate DC and appliances need AC, and there has to be a way to store it.

Solar Panels; How They Convert Light Into Electricity

The amount of energy that can be stored will depend on the equipment being used. Some materials absorb light better than others. There are individual solar panels that can overcome the issue of the material to be used and this is by using multiple materials.

The panels are not cheap and need to be precisely constructed. The controller also costs a lot and need to be able to cope with a lot of energy. In some regions of the States, up to $900, a year can be saved thanks to solar power, although the installation cost can be as much as $30,000.

Where Does The Electronic Waste of America End Up?

Jim Puckett flies above the Pacific Ocean looking for the electronic waste of America. He wants people to know what happens to their devices as the USA produces more e-waste than any other country. Lead and mercury can be found in the devices, and there are around 50,000 trucks full of electronics recycled every year.

Basel Action Network have spent the last two years researching and have discovered that some electronic wastes are being exported rather than recycled. Along with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, they have placed 200 tracking devices into old computers and then sent them to centers that advertise themselves as green or environmentally friendly.

As a result, it was possible to track the devices and see where the property had ended up. Almost a third were sent to other countries – some of them clocking up 12,000 miles and of these six had been deposited in Oregon and Washington. Some Wastes were found in China, Thailand, Pakistan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico, and Canada.

Puckett met Chines journalist Dongxia Su, and they looked around the region of New Territories in Hong Kong where a lot of the electronic devices ended up. Following the tracker’s they arrived at a dirt road and counted down the feet until they arrived at a wall of packing containers.

Here, devices are searched for, refurbished and sent to Pakistan. Regardless of health and safety, mercury is being released into the air and masks are not used. Operation Green Fence has been set up by the Chinese authorities, and this prevents electronics crossing the border.

Turn Your Bike To a E-Bike in Minutes

As all other forms of transport seem to be turning to electricity, it is only right that the bicycle does as well. GeoOrbital has produced a wheel that can be added to the bike to take the strain out of the morning commute. A ride of 30 miles can be powered by the lithium battery and Brushless DC motor and if a bit of help is given it can be as far as 50. Most of the power is based on the wheel, but the throttle can be found on the handlebars and this is a button showing power and outlining how much further can be travelled thanks to the electrical power.

Flat tyres are also going to be less problematic than they were in the past and there will be less need to carry out as many pressure checks. High-density foam is used to make the tyres and the promise has been made to ensure that they feel just the same as a rubber tyre.  A USB port has been provided in the handlebars to that phones can be charged and night lights can be used so that it is possible to cycle at any time.

Kickstarter is being used to fund the project and since the launch, there has been $770,000 pledged already. This is double the amount that was hoped for. Three rounds of early bird pledges are out of stock so it will cost $699 to receive the wheel as early as possible. Full price will eventually be $950.

Our Online Passwords are so Easy that Most “Hacking” Doesn’t Require Actual Hacking

It does not always take a great deal of effort to hack a computer system and even with firewalls and virus protection installed; it is possible to gain access. It just takes someone who knows or even guesses the password and username, and they will soon be able to treat the machine and data as their own.

Verizon produces an annual report regarding breaches of data, and it is seen as the report that is of great importance within the industry. According to the latest one, 63% of data breaches take place as a result of the password and username not being strong enough. If it was not because they were weak, it was because they were stolen. Sometimes the attacks are well targeted and in others are opportunistic.

It is a common occurrence for a number of reasons not least because people often use a password that will be obvious to people who know them, or somehow linked to the site that they are using. Sometimes the person will be tricked into revealing the password as an email is received claiming to be from a bank or company, and the receiver clicks on a link or gives away important details.

There is a second problem, and this is the fact that many sites don’t insist that users take part in two-step authentication. In this process, additional information has to be entered after the password. This will either be selected parts of another password, or a code sent to a phone or email account and is the way forward.
