Cambridge’s Amazon is Home to a Delivery Drone Lab

It’s been kept under wraps for some time now (we’re assuming), but now, Amazon has revealed their once secret drone lab based in Cambridge, England. As part of its unveiling, the internet giant invited both the local newspaper (The Cambridge News) and eight students from nearby Steeple Morden Primary School to attend its futuristic style lab.

Located on Castle Park business estate, Amazon’s drone lab was on the show for the 9 and ten-year-olds as part of the visit where they were shown prototypes, as well some of the equipment used to build them. As part of the whole experience, some of the children were given a chance to fly some of the drones as well.

It’s not the only Amazon lab to exist. There are others located in Austria, Israel, and the US, but the one in Cambridge is said to both the biggest and most important of them all. The special Amazon delivery drones will use GPS to find the address they need before flying there at heights of up to 400ft. Vigorous testing has already been going on at Amazon’s testing facility which is just 8 miles from the lab itself.

Prime Air corporate communications, Kristen Kish feels that Cambridgeshire is a great location for the lab and testing site and stated, ” We love the UK, we have a really strong base here in the UK and a lot of opportunities here, our customers are fantastic. Cambridge is a hub of innovation; it has a long history of doing amazing things.”

Although the drones are not quite ready for everyday, commercial use, it does show that it is coming and not in the too far distance. As part of an initiative to keep children interested in the world of drones, Amazon will be running a competition where entrants will have to design their own drone, and the winners will get a special invite to the lab.
