Google Maps Becoming a Social Platform

Latest Hot DEALS

Social media is big business – just ask Facebook founder, Mark Zuckerberg. And now, Google want in on some of the action. Google currently own Panoramio, which is as close to social media as it currently gets, but that is all about to change following the announcement that as of 4th November 2016, there will be no more Panoramio. Instead, the internet giant will be focusing on updating Google Maps to become more social media based.

For those of you who aren’t aware, Panoramio is a geolocation-orientated photo sharing platform that was set up back in 2005. Despite its success, in 2014 Google announced that intended to close Panoramio and instead integrate it into Google Maps. So, as of the d-date on the 4th November, users will then have one more year’s access to their photos on Panoramio, but won’t be able to add any new photos or comments.

This is not the first time that Google Maps has been mentioned in getting a revamp, and more features added. By Google turning their Maps program into a more social site it will become more appealing to marketers and advertisers and will, therefore, generate more money. For anyone that may have used it recently, you may have noticed that Google Maps has already become more personable as you can now add your own locations and confirm suggested edits.

Google Maps will also be integrating AI technology into their program as have spent almost 20 years gathering mapping data that puts it way ahead of the likes of Tesla, Apple, or Facebook. By concentrating all of the company’s efforts on making something they already have that works well even better, they will be much better placed to stay ahead of the game and the competition.
