IBM is a technology company worth billions of dollars and is one of the leading businesses in the field. Having formed back in 1911 in New York where their headquarters remain, IBM has provided more than 170 countries with the use of their technology. They’re a company that has always been on top of the game and today is no different. IBM has just unleashed a new Power8 processor that claims to be more powerful than anything they have ever launched before and will be the perfect tool to assist with compute-heavy workloads.

The new servers are specifically designed for dealing with cognitive workloads and helping data centers with data crunching tasks. All three new systems are Linux based and will include exclusive acceleration technology that is based on PowerAccel.  Nvidia has also been choosing to form part of the Power System, and the Power8 chip uses their NVLink to hook up with Tesla GPU’s and has been classified as being five times faster than an x86-based system.

IBM's New Linux Based Power System Server Kicks Butt

Data from IBM suggests that the new servers are 80 percent more efficient than the x86-based servers. General Manager of Power at IBM Systems, Doug Balog commented, “Performance increasingly gates the user insights and the business value you can deliver with advanced analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.  Accelerated computing that can drive big data workloads will become foundational in the cognitive era.”

These new systems are available now (apart from the IBM Power System S288LC which is for high performance – that will be ready around the 26 September to ship out, with prices beginning at $5,999 online).
