Britain and the European Union are facing some tough times ahead as the separation process is rolled out. The departure has seen oil prices, economic growth and the value of the pound fluctuate severely since June 24, and quite what will be the future is yet to be seen for both Britain and the remaining members of the European Union.
Some may say that the Brexit could not have come at a worse time when it comes to the environmental goals that are meant to be in place and presented to the European Commission in just a few weeks time with the Paris Climate Treaty. With Britain’s exit from the European Union, this could have serious implications on achieving their collective plan of reducing greenhouse gas emissions to 40 percent lower than in 1990, by 2030. Currently, it is unclear whether Britain will still continue to contribute to this target.
Another scheme under threat from Britain’s exit from the European Union is the European carbon emissions trading scheme. Questions are being raised as to whether Britain will contribute to the EU goal of providing 20 percent of its generated power from renewable energy sources by 2020.
As well as the factors that will affect the EU, the is huge uncertainty among the people of Britain as to what is going to happen over the next few years. Some of the main concerns are who is going to lead the people in moving in this direction now the decision has been made to leave? With British Prime Minister David Cameron’s resignation following swiftly after the vote was decided, and Amber Rudd sure to follow, this does not give the British people much sense of security or faith in their government.
This could mean troubled times for Britain in terms of its domestic energy policies. Big supporters for the Brexit vote, Boris Johnson and Nigel Farrage, and Michael Give are not exactly in favor of supporting climate change policies and have made this public knowledge. Just three years ago Mr. Gove wanted to scrap climate change from the school curriculum, and Mr. Farrage wants to see the Department of Energy and Climate Change abolished.
