Germany Needs to Build 3,000 Wind Turbines To Replace a Nuclear Power Plant

Lower Saxony boasts the most productive nuclear power plant ever.  In China, the Three Gorges Dam is the largest, but it would be unfair to compare them carefully. It is planned for closure, but estimates show that thousands of wind turbines will be needed to replace the power it gives, and costs could exceed $12 billion.

In a step up from just providing baseload power, Grohnde is providing grid stability and nuclear plants were never thought capable of this. This is likely to stop however as there are plans for closure is 2021. Since 2001, there have been plans to stop reliance on nuclear power although Angela Merkel added years to the original end date. After Fukushima incident, Germany installed 11,000 MW of coal power. However, these instalments had nothing to the with Japan’s nuclear meltdown; it is a result of Schroder’s original anti-nuclear plan which is decided in 2005.

Eight have been closed already, and this means that the schedule services are falling behind, and there are fears that there could be severe issues, but fortunately, there have not been any yet. The future remains uncertain across Europe as there seems to be a commitment to renewable power. Many GW of power has been lost in the last few years and some cases the losses came from new plants.

Grohnde will not be replaced by gas generation, but it will be wind turbines, and there will have to be thousands of them to keep up sufficient production- back-up capacity is going to be needed, and brown coal will likely provide that. Fortunately for Germany, they have a great deal of brown coal.

Technology brings substance to sustainability

Sustainability has been the buzz word for corporations for some time.  They want their brand to be known as sustainable, but there have been limitations. The people who are trying to change this are the technology brands and where they lead it is hoped others will follow.  It seems that there are business leaders who are aware that not doing anything is not an option and Microsoft are the first company named by GreenBiz as being involved.

Chief Executive Rob Bernard says that this view is held throughout the workforce the basis of it coming from the president’s office. They are not the only ones involved, as other giants of the technology industry are having the sustainability agenda appearing in the boardroom.

Energy Star, Leed, and the CDP – Carbon Disclosure Project – have been working with organisations to identify and set out their footprint and then determine how they can improve it. Technology is changing the way that buildings use energy, and this is the major part of the blueprint. The software is able to provide the level of detail that will allow sustainability targets to be met and allow data to be provided for capital planning. This will be a direct way to improve the companies’ bottom line.

Recruitment and retention are a hot topic and the millennials are the largest percentage of the American working population. Firms are aware that climate change is an issue and how they will be affected. The Independent has a letter from 17 British executives promoting standardization of risk.

The Earth’s Oceans Will Have More Plastic Than Fish by 2050

It has been estimated that we use 300 million tons of plastic per year and often it an item that is used just once. Seabirds are at risk as a result of the discarded items and rivers, and oceans are slowly clogging up according to the World Economic Forum, who don’t see there being improvements in the near future.

Dr. Debora Iglesias-Rodriquez of Southampton University is concerned and tells Truthout that marine pollution is a significant problem as marine wildlife are eating items. The North Atlantic already has a large are full of rubbish and the ecological system is being altered.

One review has shown 10% of fish could have consumed plastic and plastic bags are becoming more popular so there should be an increase rather than decrease as just 5% of plastic is recycled and producing is increasing.

Dr. Wallace J. Nichols of California Academy of Sciences added that virtually all turtles have issues with plastic. They are also suffering as a result of global warming as their eggs are almost frying on the beach. Sea pollution overall is growing far too quickly.

Nicholas sees the future situation as Ocean 3, and it will either be impossible to function or the recipient of some major changes. Packaging would have to change, and this will need a lot of political will. The next 50 years are going to be vital as it is at this timescale that will determine the success of the projects.

According to a January report published by the World Economic Forum The earth’s oceans will have more plastic than fish by 2050.

Researcher Used Fluid Dynamics to Explain How Quickly Vampires Could Drain Your Blood

It is 85 years since Bela Lugosi’s Dracula was released and it coincides with some unusual research from students at Leicester University. The Physics and Chemistry Department have been using fluids to determine how long it would take for the undead to remove all blood from a human. Via the carotid artery in the neck, it would take around 6.4 minutes to remove 15% of the blood.

The decision to stop at 15% was simple. Further blood loss would mean the rate that the heart beats would be altered and if there were less taken, the circulation would not be affected. Although the aorta is the main artery, it becomes five arteries, and this is why the report focuses on the carotid artery.

The assumption was made that five arteries would be of the same thickness so they could work out the velocity that went to the carotid artery. The students worked out the pressure difference by measuring the pressure in the arteries about the pressure in the air.

By then determining blood density while at room temperature they were then able to work out what would leak from the human necks- the only further assumption had to be that each of the two fangs would leave an incision of around 0.5mm each.

If the vampire took just 15% of the 5 litres of blood in the average human, ¾ of a litre would be taken and 6.4 minutes would be taken to do it. Findings appeared in the Journals of Physics Special Topics showing the students creative side.

These Brain Stimulating Headphones Will Make You a Better Athlete

Brain stimulating headphones are being worn by cyclist Dan Chao and by using these on a stationary bike, his performance has improved on his normal bike. He is a co-founder of Halo Neuroscience, and their Halo Sports headphones pass electric currents through the head by reaching the motor cortex.

Known as transcranial direct current stimulation, the neurons fire more quickly. New connections are made, and athletes training will improve. Scientific research carried out over 15 years shows that this can happen, and it can be beneficial to those who have suffered strokes and also help with learning motor skills. There are however fears that the product should not yet be sold on the market. It is suggested that improved athleticism has not been proved, and it is not yet safe enough to take forward.

Chao has been focusing on the use of the headphones to stimulate the motor cortex, and the intention is to publish all of the findings in peer- reviewed journals. At the moment, all that is published is a small amount of data on the Halo website. Piano playing is said to be affected as healthy volunteers learned a sequence of chords and another group found that their strength increased when holding an item between the index finger and thumb.

$9 million funding has led to Lux Capital and Andreessen Horowitz selling a service package of Halo Sport to organizations, and the first purchaser was the US military. However, a psychiatric professor at the North Carolina School of Medicine feels there should not be sales due to lack of research.

Abandoned Factory Becomes a Floating Field of Fishes and Algae

Floating Fields uses public space for an edible landscape and replicating the ecology that was once defining the Pearl River Delta. The fish ponds that were once the form of commerce are gone and in their place is dry land.

Thomas Chung has taken the site of the Dacheng Flour Mills that are no longer in use and noticed that the disused walls and pavement have signs of nature taking them over. He brought back the waterway that once ran alongside the factory and turned it into a group of filtering ponds. The rubble that had been left was broken up, and pathways were set up between ponds and made it so that it is possible to walk or sit meaning that there is a link between leisure and food production. It has further been developed so as the site also contains a library, learning resource centre that is multi-use, and a café/restaurant.

Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge VS Hydraulic Press

We have seen the destruction of the smartphones very long time. Some people want to test the limits of the phones; some just want some YouTube viewers, and some have no logical reason at all. They shooting at them with several type of guns, using hammers, put them under the water – now some models are waterproof – but not much popular anymore, drop tests, go over the smartphone with a vehicle and many, but this is one the most brutal one we have ever seen.

This new type of destruction technic and they used a hydraulic press which can put a 400-ton pressure to the one innocent Samsung Galaxy S7. We understand the point of some test; there are many tests that very logical to the like drop test or underwater tests but this one made us feel sad for that poor Samsung. But still so exciting to watch.

Eight Percent of Our DNA is Non-Human

We have around 8% alien DNA and by this, we mean it is viral fragments that are not human. This also applies to other things on earth that are equipped with a spinal cord and a jaw. This is a sign of how evolution has taken place over the years.

Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences has published a study showing there is less human DNA than was thought. 19 pieces can be classed as ancient, and %2 of those in the study had the ingredients for a full virus. The forerunner of DNA – RNA – is full of retroviruses and they are able to take hold of a host by putting a replica of their RNA into the host via the genome and humans are included in the list of hosts. HIV – the human immunodeficiency virus – is one of the retroviruses that is doing this at the present time.

This form of infection has been going on for hundreds of thousands of years, and there are small amounts that have stayed within their DNA. These are passed down through the generations after they have been copied.

17 HERVs have been known about for a while, but now a further 19 have been added. 1 has been found in some subjects, and it is an entire genome. It is only the second *provirus that can survive in humans. In the future it could act like a working virus – something fragments of HERVs can’t do. Virologist John Coffin of Tufts School of Medicine believes we can now study past epidemics.

Jurassic World Starts With Chicken Legs

We have to change the way we think about the extinction of dinosaurs, as it seems that not all disappeared, but some turned to the birds we know today. Chilean researchers have been working on chickens, and the legs have been seen to be similar to those on avian dinosaurs. University of Chile researcher Joao Botelho has been investigating the changes.

The gene IHH – Indian Hedgehog – was inhibited and strange results were found. The fibulae of modern day chickens are prevented from growing as they used to. The bones no longer meet the ankle in the way they did with dinosaurs.

The results have been published in a journal called Evolution, and the changes are attributed to the maturation of a one bone thanks to a bone in the ankle called the calcaneum. Once IHH has been regulated down, it seems that the fibula and tibia will grow to be the same length, and although the fibula grows longer than it does in controls, the tibia is not as long and tends to be bent.

Chicken Legs to Jurassic World Chicken Legs to Jurassic World

There was never an intention of allowing the so-called dino-chickens to hatch as there was no record of what may have become of them. The aim of the research was to discover why the legs changed – mainly why they no longer grew in the way that they did when they were dinosaurs.

Alexander Vargas explained that there is now a great deal known about bird development, but also how the transition of the past took place.

Fastest Growing Solar Energy Project on Earth is About to Collapse

Did you know that the fastest growing solar energy project on earth is about to collapse? Ivanpah, a two-point-two billion solar power plant in California has recorded a drop in its anticipated power output. So far it estimates that a whole year will be necessary to restore its past target power output. Otherwise, it might close down.

Granted amnesty on Thursday, by the California Public Utilities Commission, Ivanpah plant will no longer evade its contract with Pacific Gas & Electric and Southern California Edison.

Ever since construction began, with backup from NRG Energy, Google and BrightSource, the plant has received endless condemnation from environmentalists. With numerous mirrors, the plant can gather lots of sun’s heat, which it uses to warm water, produce steam and ultimately create electricity. The problem with it, since its introduction to the online community in 2014, is that it has been costlier than photovoltaic cells solar power plants.

Although it was once a fierce rival to the solar photovoltaic, concentrated solar power’s fame has now plummeted. That’s why BrightSource canceled its concentrated solar power factory in Inyo Country in California last year.

Compared to photovoltaic, concentrated solar has an advantage. If it is used with an energy storage system like the heated molten salt tanks, it can produce electricity even when there is no sunlight. According to research was done by the NREL (National Renewable Energy Laboratory) in 2013, the value of concentrated solar and thermal storage might be 32 to 40 dollars per Megawatt-hour higher than the Photovoltaic plant value in 2020.

The SolarReserve, the main BrightSource competitor, is constructing a Nevada concentrated power plant (of up 110-megawatt) that will have molten-salt storage tanks. Another one of its own is being built in South Africa.
