Editorial Policy

This policy describes how TrendinTech reports, checks, publishes and corrects its coverage. It applies to everything published under the TrendinTech name, including news, analysis, explainers, reviews and contributor pieces. The policy is owned by the Editor-in-Chief and is reviewed whenever our practices change.

1. Sourcing

We work from primary sources wherever one exists. For a product announcement that means the company’s own statement, documentation or filing. For a security story it means the advisory, the researcher’s write-up or the vendor’s disclosure. For research it means the paper or dataset itself, not a summary of it. We link to the source so readers can check it for themselves.

When we rely on another publication’s reporting, we say so and link to it. When a claim comes from a single secondary source and we have not been able to confirm it independently, the article says that plainly. We do not present speculation as established fact, and we do not strip attribution to make a story sound more certain than it is.

People quoted in our stories are identified by name and role unless there is a specific reason to protect their identity. We do not invent quotes, composite sources or fictional examples presented as real.

2. Verification

Before publication, the facts in an article are checked by someone other than the person who wrote it. That check covers names, dates, figures, product specifications, prices, version numbers, quotes and the links that support them. Where a figure cannot be verified, it is removed or clearly flagged as unconfirmed.

Technical claims are checked against the relevant documentation or, where possible, by testing. If we have not used a product ourselves, we do not describe hands-on experience with it.

3. AI-assisted tools

TrendinTech uses AI-assisted tools in parts of its research and drafting process. In practice that can include gathering and summarising source material, producing first drafts, suggesting structure, checking for errors and generating images. Readers have a right to know this, so we state it plainly.

What AI assistance does not change is accountability. Every article is reviewed by a human editor before it is published. The editor checks facts against sources, confirms that quotes and figures are real and removes anything that cannot be supported. If an AI-assisted draft gets something wrong and that error makes it to publication, the correction process below applies exactly as it would to any other article, and the responsibility sits with the editorial team, not the tool.

We do not use AI tools to fabricate sources, quotes, people, test results or events. We do not publish unreviewed machine output.

4. Corrections and updates

When we publish an error of fact, we correct it on the article and add a note stating what was wrong and when it was fixed. The original headline and URL are kept unless the headline itself was the error. We do not delete articles to avoid owning up to a mistake.

We distinguish between three kinds of change:

  • Corrections fix a factual error. These always carry a note.
  • Updates add new information to a story that was accurate when published, such as a company response or a follow-up development. These carry a dated update note.
  • Minor edits fix typos, formatting or broken links without changing meaning. These are not noted.

Articles from our 2015 to 2023 archive are kept as a historical record. When an archive article is revised, the article shows the date it was updated so readers can tell what was reported at the time and what came later.

5. Independence

Editorial decisions are made by the editorial team. Advertisers, sponsors, sources and the companies we cover do not decide what we publish, do not see articles before publication and cannot have coverage pulled because they do not like it. Reporters do not accept payment, gifts or favours from companies they cover, beyond review units that are returned or disclosed.

TrendinTech is operated by Orkatek, which is responsible for the business side of the site, including advertising. Commercial relationships are handled separately from the newsroom. If a commercial relationship is relevant to an article, it is disclosed in that article.

6. Affiliate links and sponsored content

Some articles may contain affiliate links. If you buy a product through one of these links, TrendinTech may receive a commission. This does not affect the price you pay and does not influence what we write about the product. Articles that contain affiliate links say so.

Sponsored or paid content, where a third party has paid for a piece to appear, is labelled clearly at the top of the piece so readers know what they are looking at before they start reading. Sponsored content is never presented as independent editorial coverage, and the editorial team does not write sponsored pieces as if they were news.

We do not accept payment for favourable coverage, for including a company in a news story, or for placing undisclosed links in editorial articles.

7. Reviews and opinion

Reviews describe our own experience with a product and say how we tested it. Opinion pieces are labelled as such, and still have to meet the sourcing standards above for any facts they rely on.

8. Contributors

Pieces by outside contributors go through the same editing, verification and disclosure process as staff articles. Contributors must disclose any relationship with companies or products they write about, and that disclosure appears on the article. Our contributor guidelines explain what we accept and what we do not.

9. How to flag an error

If you believe we have published something inaccurate, email [email protected] with “Correction” in the subject line. Please include the article URL, the specific statement you believe is wrong and, if you have it, a source that supports the correction. Every request is read by an editor. If the correction is warranted, it is made on the article with a note. If we decide not to make a change, we will tell you why.
