Christini is a small mountain bike company based in Philadelphia that are the only company known to date to have released an all wheel drive mountain bike and now will be used to hopefully smash a new world record in cycling to the South Pole. Kate Leeming is the lady behind the world record attempt and her tool of choice to help her do it is the Christini AWD Fat Bike.
The bike is currently being showcased on Kickstarter as the team aims to raise $40,000 in funding to get the product out there really, and at te very least, help Kate get to the South Pole. Kate contacted the company back in 2013 when she was looking for the best possible bike option to complete this challenge with and the AWD bike immediately sprang into mind.
The AWD Fat Bike is built completely different to most bikes, but then that’s why there are no other AWD bikes around – they are mega complex! The gearing itself features an additional mechanism that moves a telescoping drive shaft through the frame at various universal joints. The shaft is also built differently too as it goes from the back wheel, through the head tube, to the crown of the fork then down into the front wheel. This allows much better traction and a more even transfer of power.
Leeming is hoping that this bike is the bike to help her get a world record very soon. With its five-inch tires and robust frame, it has been built with this challenge in mind, so should be worth every penny of the $5,000 it costs to purchase one and can hopefully rise to the challenge.
