A little while ago Elon Musk announced his plans to develop a solar roof through his newly acquired business, SolarCity. Although Dow attempted something similar in the past involving solar shingles, the idea never really took off. But, Musk is adamant that his solar roof idea is not the same and will be much better than anything that has been done so far on a similar scale. However, a new start-up company, Forward, may just beat them to it.
Forward are based in upstate New York and the company is hoping to raise $50,000 through Kickstarter to fund its project to create these solar roofs. Like Musk, the team at Forward have realized the potential of using the actual roof as the solar panel and not just sticking them on top. The solar roofs look aesthetically pleasing and are designed to look exactly like current steel roofing options, including a whole range of different styles and colors to choose from.
Statistics show that every year around 5 million American households replaces their roof. With the cost of these solar roofs being around the same as a traditional roof will cost, consumers will be getting so much more value for their money if they choose to have one installed. They will have a roof that looks the same as it did before, only now it is more durable and will generate free electricity too! It’s not just those looking to replace their roofs that could benefit, but if the solar roofs really do take off then, new build properties could also have the pleasure of having them installed as standard.
