The use of drones for various tasks is becoming more and more frequent. From surveillance to first response, to fire-fighting purposes, these drones are really making an impact, and now, they may just end up delivering our next lot of packages too. Car giant, Mercedes-Benz has just teamed up with drone delivery company, Matternet, in an attempt to create a Vision Van that works on an automated system using two drones to deliver the goods.
Although Mercedes-Benz and Matternet are not the first two companies to explore the possibility of this type of drone delivery service, they think they can succeed where others may not. Instead of concentrating on electric cars, these guys are focused on vans, and this particular one that would be used for deliveries would feature a 101hp engine and have an enviable range of 270 kilometers. The idea would be to use a van in which to store the goods and drive to the location where the package was to be delivered. Then, the drones that would be housed in the back of the van would fly out and drop off the parcels.
The van itself would also be automated, so no need for any human delivery drivers either. If this idea does kick off it could change the way all deliveries are made from now on ( for small to medium sized packages anyway ). So, next time you are waiting in for a package to arrive, just be aware that when you open your front door, you may just be pleasantly surprised for more than one reason.
