Drive.ai – The New Brain of the Car

Drive.ai is a start-up company and the next big technology to hit the world of autonomous driving.  Established in Stanford and co-founded by Carol Reiley, this start-up plans to “sell the brains of the car.” The system will consist of a series of LiDAR and Radar sensors, similar to those that others use, but theirs also includes deep learning software embedded in it to give it the ultimate advantage against other autonomous vehicle manufacturers.

The Drive.ai system will come as a roof kit that can be fitted onto any vehicle, and the company have already made deals with some auto companies but have not yet disclosed who they are.  However, some fleets will be going out within the next few months including unnamed package delivery, ridesharing, and public transport companies that will be using the Drive.ai technology.  Already the company has managed to secure $12 million in investment from venture capital fund Oriza Ventures and others that remain anonymous.

The idea of using deep learning in autonomous vehicles sets Drive.ai apart from all the rest.  Their system will learn on its own to be able to deduce better what is around them and allow them to make crucial decisions faster. This is the 13th company to have tested its driverless technology on the public roads of California, and they are already in the top 5 cars in most miles driven.

Another amazing feature of the Drive.ai system is that it has the ability to communicate with pedestrians.  Included as part of the roof kit will be a LED sign that can make sounds and produce text or pictures to surrounding pedestrians to advise them of what the car is doing.  Other companies that are also jumping on the pedestrian communication devices market are Google and BMW, so watch this space for more fine examples to come.
