Sami Inkinen is the founder of the new Silicon Valley-based startup, Virta, and according to him, the company’s goals are simple. Inkinen said, “Our mission is to reverse diabetes in 100 million people by 2025. It’s an ambitious goal, but we’re motivated every day by the lives we’ve already changed.”

It may sound a little ambitious, but if Sami and team can make it happen, the world will certainly be a better place, and their results so far are promising. More than 415 million people across the globe are affected by Type 2 diabetes. The way in which Virta can help is by remotely monitoring the patient’s food consumption and keeping the disease in check at the same time. The company claims that it can help reverse the disease altogether without the use of any surgery or medication. As part of their study, they have published more that 300 papers on the subject and worked with around 6,000 patients. So, the team is fairly confident with what they have so far and are keen to push forward with it as a recognized and supported form of treatment.
If this new wave of treatment does go ahead, it will significantly reduce the medical cost of the disease and has the approval of the former chief medical officer of the American Diabetes Association, Dr. Robert Ratner, too. To date, the company has already managed to secure $37 million in funding from various companies including Paypal, Venrock, Allen & Company, and Redmile Group. So, it’s evident that it’s a very good idea and hopefully, we’ll be seeing a lot more of Virta in the future.
