Virtual reality – it may have been a long time coming, but now that it’s here, it ain’t going anywhere and soon it will become the medium of the future when it comes to both storytelling and marketing. Thousands of VR headsets were sold this holiday season and Forrester predicts that by 2020 there will be more than 50 million of these units in operation by both consumers and businesses.
This is just the beginning for virtual reality and over the next decade it will change advertising and marketing completely. One of the ways it will do this is through focusing on enhanced storytelling. Storytelling is an ideal way to sell a product and to interact with your customers on a more personal level. Through virtual reality businesses can create a story from start to finish that can show the history of their business or an insight into how its products are made. This can help customers feel more at home with the company and more willing to spend their money with them.
Virtual reality is a tool that is like no other as it gives people the opportunity to experience things they may never have got the chance typically, such as skydiving over the Grand Canyon, climbing Mt. Everest, or driving a race car around Silverstone. Ok, so it may not be exactly like the real thing, but you can be assured it will cost you less and you don’t even have to leave the house! Even NASA are getting in on the action and are working on a VR device that allows users to walk around their living room’s as if it’s the surface of Mars. It’s also a great way to get people to try your product out before they buy. For example, someone who is car or house shopping may not want to traipse halfway across the country to visit different properties or motors, and with a virtual reality system, they wouldn’t have to. They could have a virtual tour from the comfort of their own home, and could then arrange a second viewing in person if need be.
