Try and say that three times quickly! It shouldn’t come as too much of a shock that HP are now using 3D printers to print their own parts, and that’s what has been discovered this week. According to sources, at least half of the plastic used in HP’s new 3D printer is made using 3D printing technology.
There are actually two new devices that HP has decided to make using 3D printers, and both should be on sale before the end of the year. Printing is more economically viable than molding if you are producing less than 55,000 pieces. Stephen Nigro is head of HP’s 3D printing, and he said, “The reason we’re doing it is not because we can, although that certainly would be one reason. It’s because we should: it actually makes economic sense for us to print those parts; we can actually save money.”
The two devices that will take advantage of the 3D printed parts will not be your average desktop printer but will be industrial-size 3D printers with price tags starting at $130,000. To try and offset some of the cost of manufacturing them, HP went for 3D printing as many parts of it as they could. And, the team were pleasantly surprised to find that around half of the printer’s parts could be made this way. So, now that we have printers making printer parts, we just need printers to print printers. Next, I guess!
