Massive Slash on Food Waste Thanks to Blue Apron

Food waste across the U.S. is pretty bad and the amount of food that ends up unnecessarily on landfill sites is far too high.  However, there are various companies across the nation that are looking to do something about it and are doing it quite well.  Blue Apron is a company that was founded in 2012 in New York and their main goal has always been to slash the amount of food waste across the world while providing customers with a convenient, ready to go, cooking solution.

With Blue Apron, you order meal kits that are designed and boxed to only have the exact amount of ingredients that you need for that one meal, so there is no food waste.  A recent study revealed that over 60% less food is wasted at Blue Apron’s food preparation site and by consumers than cooking the same meal using grocery store ingredients.  Another study revealed that while the average grocery store threw out around 10.5% of food, Blue Apron only threw out 5.5%.

Blue Apron also works directly with farmers to predict demand which also limits the amount of unnecessary food waste.  Matt Salzberg, CEO of Blue Apron, says, “One way to think about it is if you’re a grocery store, you buy a lot of perishable food and put it on your shelf, and hope that someone shows up to buy it from you before it rots.  With us, we know our demand ahead of time, before we ever get any food into our centers.”

As well as offering customers streamlined packages of food, they also work hard finding ways to improve demand forecasting, using automated equipment to process food, and making campaigns to make others aware of the issues concerning food waste.  The company is also dedicated to working with suppliers on issues such as crop rotation.   It’s a great idea and one that is catching on rapidly.  If you are interested in cutting down your food waste, then why not check Blue Apron out now and see what you could save.
