Smartphones have become an important part of many people’s lives, and it is hard to imagine life without them. But, is your phone doing better than it is worth? Scientists are now stating that there could be a potential link between the use of smartphones and the risk of cancer.
There are expected to be over 4 billion mobile phones in use around the globe today. According to statistics, out of this figure, around 39 percent are smartphone users and that is set to increase to almost 50 percent by 2017! That is quite an alarming amount of people that could potentially be at risk from cancer according to studies carried out by the US government.
The study was set up to investigate how radio frequencies used in US wireless networks affected the health in rats and essentially humans. Results from the tests confirmed scientists worry in that the more radiation the mice were exposed to, the more likely it was for them to develop cancer.
Researchers have been looking into this subject for quite some time now, and their main concerns are that the phones emit radio waves that have been known to cause cancer in rats, their increased use across the globe means and increase in radio frequencies, as does the length of time we talk on them.
Although the tests showed the radiation increasing the risk of developing cancer in rats, there is still no concrete evidence that confirms smartphones will cause the disease, and further studies are due to continue. If we look at the flip side of the statistics, we are given comfort in the fact the number of new brain cancers to be diagnosed has decreased over the last decade. If mobile phones were causing cancer, with their rise in use in the last ten years, wouldn’t that have had a different effect on that figure?
