The world of virtual reality and augmented reality has been getting more press recently as both Google and Microsoft announce plans to develop further in these fields. Although both companies have slightly different approaches to this fascinating field, with the backing of these two multi-billion dollar companies, both are guaranteed to be worth looking into for various reasons.
Google’s fresh approach to the world of VR comes in the form of a platform named DayDream, which will be available this fall. It is an Android-based virtual reality platform where users can use their phone to install the DayDeam and app and instantly they have their very own handheld VR platform. However, unless you have the Huawei Nexus 6P, you will need to have a newer model phone as DayDream will only work with high spec Androids.

Launching later this year, Google already has on board eight smartphone vendors who are happy to have DayDream as part of their technology, including Huawei and Samsung. With Samsung currently investing in partnerships with Facebook’s Oculus, we are yet to see if that will still continue or if the partnership will shortly fizzle out.
On the other end of the tech, the scale is Microsoft with their contribution to the AR/VR field, HoloLens. HoloLens is an augmented reality viewer which is stand alone but is recommending Windows Holographic as the best platform to use. It is Microsoft’s way of allowing other hardware vendors to build using their platform.
Primarily aimed at the commercial market, HoloLens’ uniqueness to Google’s DayDream lies in it making money off the back off other vendors creating hardware, rather than creating any new technology itself. So, with both companies heading in different directions, only will time will tell as to who has chosen the best path to succeed.
