Reporter Hacked While Writing an Article About Apple and FBI

The Apple and FBI battle still continue and keep the reporter busy every day there is new improvement about the issue, and journalist Steven Petrow decided to work on his latest article about this popular issue while flying to Dallas aboard an American Airways plane. He was not concerned about the work he was carrying out until he landed and found out that he had been hacked. Clearly the FBI have an interest in all aspects of this story.

Using the in-flight connection Gogo, he read up on the story and send emails. When the plane landed, he was informed by another passenger that they knew what he had been doing and admitted to hacking him. They were also able to give him exact extracts from an email he had received. Not only had this passenger hacked Petrow he had hacked the rest of the passenger’s devices. The hacker asked Petrow to think about what could have happened had he been using online banking or arranging a liaison with a hooker.

It is not difficult to hack via public Wi-Fi but the concerns for Petrow were along the lines of things such as his Facebook profile and health records, to say nothing of the aforementioned banking. He felt violated by what had happened and while not committing a crime, he had expected his in-flight work to be private. He believes he has learned a lot from the experience.
