The United States was formed by a group of immigrants and immigrants still, make up a large part of the country today. Many people have come over to the “Land of Opportunity” to make their mark including Nikola Tesla, Elon Musk, and Satya Nadella. Immigrants are extremely important to the American technology industry. Recent research carried out by FundersClub revealed that out of its 82 founders surveyed, 39 were first-generation immigrants to the United States, meaning that early 50 percent had been born outside the United States. The survey also revealed that from these 39 founders, 18 companies were created and subsequently 6,208 jobs eventually. This works out as a staggering 159 jobs created for each immigrant founder.
However, it’s not just first-generation immigrants that we need to be thankful for; second-generation immigrants to have made massive contributions to the United States economy. Of 82 entrepreneurs that were surveyed, it was found that 21 were the children of immigrants. The combined results meant the total number of jobs created in the United States by immigrants soared to a staggering 7,632, equating to 127 per founder. Christopher Steiner, an author of the blog that looks into this data, said, “Immigrants’ contributions to the tech ecosystem have helped the United States economy remain far more buoyant in recent years than those of other developed countries. This human capital edge has always been one of the main differences between the United States and the rest of the world.”
For years America has welcomed in and prospered heavily from those coming in from other parts of the world. They have always been viewed as the country whose openness to new ideas and new people shines through. At the end of the day, it’s immigrants that made America. Maybe we just need reminding of that sometimes.
