It’s inevitable that a machine will do most tasks, quicker, more accurately, and more cost-effective than humans, but they will always lack the human touch and their ability to adapt to the situation in hand. This was looked into as part of the Obama administration’s recent report and stated, “Whether AI leads to unemployment and an increase in inequality over the long run depends not only on the technology itself but also on the institutions and policies that are in place.” The report also predicted that over the next one or two decades somewhere between 9 and 47 percent of jobs would be affected by automation.

One of the factors that will have an impact on how much automation there is around is how much we as humans decide to interact with it. Back in the 1960’s cash machines were developed and introduced into society. As convenient as it can get your cash out in the middle of the night if need be, it’s still nice knowing that you can walk into a bank and talk to a trained professional when the need arises too. Another example of where humans will always be wanted over a computer is when it comes to medicine. People would feel much more at ease talking to another human being about their medical condition than to a machine, even if they have proved to be more accurate in diagnosing conditions a lot of the time.

At the end of the day, people are people and want to be treated like so, not like some piece of machinery. But, it’s inevitable that technology will win in the end and take over roles even that we may not want it to. For example, there is now technology out there that’s been designed to replace waiting for staff, and that’s in the form of a simple iPad menu.  There are even restaurants, such as one in San Francisco, that has ditched human staff altogether.  Here, you order via an iPad and collect your meal from your dedicated cubby hole.  But, would you miss that person to person interaction you have when you normally order and receive your meal? That is the question.
