As we all look to help achieve the world’s goals of creating a much cleaner place to live, one company who is showing that even the bad things in this world have some good use is the energy giant, NRG, who has created an actual shoe out of carbon dioxide emissions. Cool, huh?
This has all been made possible by some intelligent people and advanced carbon capture technology. Although only five pairs have been created so far, it’s a pretty amazing trick nonetheless. Why not take something that is killing ourselves, the wildlife, and the environment and finally make some good use out of it.
The shoes are composed of 75% carbon emissions that have been captured from a fossil fuel burning power plant after being cooled. A few people have tested out the shoes although no one yet has commented on how comfortable they actually were. But, it still shows a promising start however you look at it.
The shoe has been aptly named the “Shoe Without a Footprint” and was an example of what is possible through the NRG sponsored, Carbon XPrize competition. This competition is one that challenges companies and individuals to invent ways to turn carbon emissions into useful products. It’s set to continue up until 2019 when the top teams will share a prize fund of $20 million and will hopefully bring the likes of carbon capture technologies one step closer to being used every day.
