Mitsuku Leads the Way for Chatbots and Wins the 2016 Loebner Prize

Mitsuku is a chatbot that was developed by a man named Steve Worswick back in 2005. Over the past decade, Mitsuku has been worked on and developed further to create a chatbot that is like no other and managed to win first prize in both the 2013 and 2016 Loebner Prize for its ingenuity and innovativeness.

For those of you that are unaware, the Loebner Prize is an annual competition that’s been in force since 1990 and was launched by Hugh Loebner. It has been hosted at various venues over the years but since 2014 has been held at Bletchley Park in the U.K and has also seen a number of other changes over the years. In the early days of the competition, it consisted of just a 5-minute conversation on a given topic. Then, as a contestant became close to beating the judges they changed the rules so the chat could be about anything. Now, it has changed again and consisted of a 25-minute chat on anything.

Creating Mitsuku was a challenge for Steve but one that he’s enjoyed thoroughly also. His venture into the world of chatbots happened around ten years ago, almost accidentally some may say. Steve was exploring the website Pandorabots where users can have a go at creating their own chatbot free of charge. His first creation was a teddy bear and was receiving more attention than his music (he was a music producer at the time). So, he decided to trade the headphones for the keyboard and went full steam ahead with the creation of his chatbot, Mitsuku.

Mitsuku is now one the most popular chatbot that’s featured on Pandorabots and gets thousands of queries from people all over the world on a daily basis. Having won both the 2013 and 2013 Loebner Prize this chatbot is certainly a force to be reckoned with.
