Meet Doppel – The New Wearable Coffee Replacement

Doppel is a new London based, start-up company founded by Jack Hooper and is looking to change the world for coffee drinkers everywhere. This wearable wristband is the new replacement for coffee or any other caffeine based drink. It fits on like a normal wristwatch, but the difference is that this little device packs a punch.  While the user is wearing the device, it starts pulsing to over twice the normal heart rate and in doing so, it tricks the mind into thinking its heart is racing this fast.

The wristband has been tested on 400 people and results from the study show that fewer mistakes were made by those wearing it.  It has a way of unconsciously making you more aware, similar to caffeine, but without the damaging effects.  The effects of the band are also known to continue for a while even after the user has removed it, and productivity levels are still very much increased while the body remains more focused.  It can also be used to produce the opposite effect and produce a feeling of a slowed down heart rate to encourage relaxation.

Technically speaking, what is happening is a psychological feedback loop is occurring between the user’s brain and their body.  Hooper and his team do not know for sure why Doppel works, it just does.  One theory is a phenomenon called entrainment where a person’s automatic functions like walking, breathing, or their heart rate can alter to synch up with something else.  This is the same theory behind when two people walk together they often end up walking in synch.

Last year on Kickstarter, Doppel raised over £110,000 plus another £50,000 from a fellowship program with the U.K’s Royal Academy of Engineering, and this year they are looking to raise even more.  The company has already sold over 1,000 devices and are getting ready for a major launch in both North America and Europe later this year where the devices will be sold for $150 each.  Disney has teamed up with Doppel to trial the device to see if it can help children fall asleep too.  The Doppel works by altering the way the way you feel; it doesn’t alter your
heart rate in any way.
