Solar power is all around us and is becoming more popular than ever before as a team of solar-powered aircraft wizards creates a machine that exceeds world records like never before. Enter the Solar Impulse 2. This fantastic creation was manufactured following the success of Solar Impulse 1 and has achieved a magnificent record in being the world’s first solar-powered aircraft to cross the Atlantic Ocean successfully.
The total flight time was just over 71 hours and completed the epic journey from New York to Seville using only electrical energy that came directly from the sun and was piloted by one-half of the flight team, Bertrand Piccard.
Bertrand and his fellow pilot and co-owner André Borschberg have completed this trip as part of an ongoing around the world on solar power only mission, and they are now over 90% complete of this 35,000km expedition. With alternating flights, the two pilots regularly swap places to ensure that both remain fit and healthy right up until the finish line (in this case, Abu Dhabi).
It is not just aircraft that can use the technology developed by the Swiss team. Bertrand’s vision includes using this technology everywhere and is confident that if we all work together, we can achieve a more energy efficient world. The magnificent duo is determined to introduce another mainstream option for flying that uses clean energy to help reduce emissions and efficiently save our lives. In completing the global trip, the team is demonstrating clearly that this type of travel using renewable energy is possible and is the only way to go if we want to enjoy the planet as we know it.
