Tesla has received much praise this week, particularly from Dr. Jonathan Braman, an orthopedic surgeon at the University of Minnesota Medical Center. The doctor and his family were recently out in his new Tesla Model X vehicle, headed to go to the family cabin for the weekend when a car accident occurred that could have been much worse have it not been for Tesla’s ingenious technology and safety features.
The incident occurred when Braman was driving south on East Bush Lake in Bloomington and looking to turn left (east) onto Interstate 494. In the car were Dr. Braman and his wife, his parents, their two children, and the family dog. When the light turned green for Braman to go, he waited a couple of seconds (just in case of any last minute red light Dodgers) before pulling out onto the interstate. Just a moment later, an SUV came into Braman’s line of sight.
Although the doctor slammed on his brakes, the impact was still estimated to happen at around 45mph and the approaching GMC SUV hit the Tesla Model X on its right fender. Upon impact the car’s airbags deployed immediately and luckily, no one suffered any major injuries. Braman states he knows why this is – “The [Tesla] car did its job. It sacrificed itself so my family could be safe. The car absorbed the impact to protect, even, the occupant of the other vehicle. The fact that my car is destroyed, and his isn’t, doesn’t mean my car did something wrong.”
Because there is no large engine to sit in front of the Tesla Model X, it instead acts as a massive crumple zone, and this is what was seen in the accident involving Dr. Braman. Tesla’s SUV is still waiting to be tested by the National Traffic Administration (NHTSA) but is expected to become the first SUV to receive the highest safety rating in all categories. So, it looks like Tesla has succeeded yet again!
