When many people think about the internet, the first company names that often spring to mind are Facebook and Microsoft. Both have made billions from the power of the web and are now set to make even more as they team up together.
The partnership has formed in order to launch an exciting new project in the land of the techies. A massive subsea internet cable, named Marea, will be spanned across the Atlantic Ocean that will allow greater capacity, higher speeds and more reliable connections for users of Microsoft and Facebook.
With over 4,100 miles in which to stretch, the cable will start by have hubs connecting Northern Virginia to Spain, then using the company Telefonica; they will expand the network to include Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The gigantic cable will be laid over more than 4100 miles of ocean in total, contained in a submarine cable system. Although this is a mammoth task the companies have ahead of them, they are expected to start in August this year and be completed as soon as October 2017.

The main aim of this newly formed team is to help them both move information more quickly around the world. With the introduction of this super, subsea cable, Microsoft is stating that it will bring lower costs and easier equipment upgrades for its customers, resulting in faster bandwidth rates. Others are also investing heavily in subsea cables, including Google, so expect to see an increase in this type of development coming our way.
With the increased number of users on Facebook and platforms to Microsoft, a much more robust infrastructure was needed to ensure users get faster speeds with the best reliability, and Marea is set to do just that.
