As 2016 draws nearer to an end, it’s a time to reflect on all the good (and bad) tech trends that have come out of the past twelve months and to take a look at where we’ll be heading over the next twelve. The following are the top 10 trends that are likely to be taking off in 2017 and be prevalent over the next five years:
1. Intelligent Things: This includes things like drones, smart appliances, and autonomous vehicles, which we are only really at the tip of the iceberg regarding what we can do with these technologies.
2. Intelligent Apps: Virtual Personal Assistants (VPA’s) are already beginning to take off as people warm to the thought of a robot PA that you can simply shut down if you want to.
3. Conversational Systems: This includes chatbots and any other system that interacts with the user in a service based environment.
4. Digital Twins: Software models of systems or things will use sensor data to improve operations and eventually represent millions of things over the next few years.
5. Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Machine Learning: This will include deep learning, natural language processing, and neural networks.
6. Mesh App and Service Architecture (MASA): Gives users an optimized solution for dealing with different channels.
7. Virtual and Augmented Reality: This will ultimately change the way in which people and software systems interact with one another.
8. Adaptive Security Architecture: Security is now largely embedded into system design.
9. Blockchain and Distributed Ledgers: These add trust to an environment that is shaky at best and gives users an extra sense of security.
10. Digital Technology Platforms: The building blocks that enable us to live in a digital society – including information systems, IoT, customer experience, analytics and intelligence, and business ecosystems.
