It’s been on the cards for a while now as many people have spoken about having internet coming from space, but no one has managed it yet. But now, SpaceX has been in cahoots with the government to seek permission to launch an internet service that is powered from satellites in space. The team at SpaceX has proposed that they use more than 4,000 satellites above the Earth to construct a massive global, high-speed internet network.
Elon Musk has estimated that this particular project will take around five years to complete at a cost of around $10 billion. The idea first came to light in 2015 around the same time Google invested heavily in the company. But, details of exactly what the network will be used for are still a little unclear. No one’s really sure if Musk intends to use it as a part of his other ventures too. Last year there were rumors flowing that the project could be laying the foundation for a Mars internet service as would be essential for anyone wanting to colonize on the Red Planet.
The project of space internet won’t be a quick one. To begin with, just 800 satellites will be erected (if the proposal is accepted). Then, once these are in place and up and running, others would be added gradually to the network. Other companies too are looking to provide a space internet service. OneWeb is one of those and it has the backing of Airbus and Boeing. Their satellites are said to be in operation by 2020, but only time will tell, so watch this space.
