NASA has formed valuable partnerships with four companies who have each been awarded six-month contracts with the space agency. This is in a bid to create a new type of aircraft that will display and demonstrate the benefits of green aviation technology. Aside from reduced carbon emissions, less noise, and less fuel, NASA’s green aviation plans also include each of these companies coming up with an approach, schedule and cost for a large-scale subsonic X-plane concept.
So far, each of the companies has progressed in different areas. Aurora Flight Services has created a twin-aisle airliner where the fuselage also aids in lift-off. It’s named the D8 Double Bubble. Dyzne Technologies designed an aircraft that features a blended wing body design that increases lift while reducing drag. Lockheed Martin has been busy building its Hybrid Wing Body that includes a blended wing body to increase lift, reduce drag and is less noisy than traditional operations. Boeing too has been developing a blended wing body design and a Truss-Braced Wing concept too that is arguably the most conventional design to date.
One supersonic aircraft that has already announced it will be in operation by as early as 2018 is Maxwell. The X-57 Maxwell is set to fly for the first time in the early part of 2018 and is a general, full-size, electric research plane that uses battery power and distributed electric propulsion to get to where it needs to go. NASA has various other green aviation projects underway which focuses on reducing airline emissions and even flight delays, so watch this space to see what they have in store for us next.
