There are lots of electric vehicles appearing on the roads today, but there are still three main problems with them: their short driving range, their high purchase costs, and the lack of charging facilities that are available publicly. These are the things that are putting potential buyers off and stopping them from experiencing the other many benefits of owning an electric vehicle. But, if more solar parking lots were created or at least those in existence offering solar charging, more people may be inclined to buy them.
The issues with the short driving range are already being addressed, and better batteries have been developed than what were first available. But, there is always room for improvement. And, while the cost has reduced significantly since electric vehicles were first introduced, they still need to come down to be competitive with traditionally fuelled vehicles.
However, it’s electric vehicle solar parking lots that need that needs work, and could be done with just a few alterations to existing places. A typical solar carport measures in at around 12-15m2 and consists of solar panels that cover the overhead structure. There is also some solar tree parking lots, although these are less common. These are laid out in islands consisting of 4-6 parking spaces and could be either on or off-grid. For cars to get the full value of solar tree parking lots, they would need to be parked there nearly all day as a whole charge would take a few hours. But, for places where there are lots of daily commuters, it would be ideal.
