A recent announcement from Tesla saw the company advising that its new firmware version 8 will be released in the next couple of weeks and is focused far more on using radar sensors on its electric vehicles. This is previously a move that Elon Musk decided was unnecessary, but since the fatal accident involving Joshua Brown, he seems to have done an 180, and now confirms that the upgrades the company has made in Firmware 8 probably would have saved his life.
During the press conference, Musk also spoke of the different things the radar could detect, including “an alien spaceship” or a “truck turning across the road.” Other changes that come with the upgraded firmware are changes to the alerts that are given to users while in Autopilot mode. With the new system, if three warning signals are ignored within the hour then the autopilot function will be disabled until the car is parked. So, Tesla is clearly feeling bad for what happened earlier in the year with the fatal accident and are doing all they can to ensure that everyone can still enjoy the benefits of autonomous driving and feel safe at the same time.
