Apple has been making the headlines again this week with the launch of its fabulous iOS 10. The newest version of Lightroom Mobile for iOS now has the ability to shoot RAW DNG photos straight from the app. This is a massive leap forward for Apple. Although Lightroom Mobile already had the ability to edit RAW files, it was never able to capture DNG RAW photos.
As part of Adobe’s announcement, the company also wrote, “Having a true end-to-end raw workflow, powered by DNG and Lightroom, on your iPhone and iPad makes it possible to create absolutely stunning photos that, until a few years ago, could only have been done with a traditional camera. The DNG file format [….] offers far more quality and control than either the JPEG or TIFF file formats.”
This is the best photographic device that has ever been fitted in any iPhone. With iOS 10 and Android OS now both using Adobe DNG as their standard file format for RAW photos, this type of photography will become more readily available for more photographers. Photoshop creator Thomas Knoll states, “In a perfect world, people would be able to shoot raw without the frustrations associated with having an array of raw file formats.
Apple’s new iOS 10 release moves us one step closer to this perfect world.” Currently, the DNG shooting feature will only be available for the iPhone 6S/Plus, iPhone SE, iPad Pro 9.7, and the Phone 7/Plus, so if you do have an iPhone 6, it may be time for an upgrade.
