In 2001, Aerospace Engineer, Roger Shawyer, set about designing what is known today as the Emdrive. The Emdrive is a type of electromagnetic thruster that provides thrust to the cavity in one particular direction as radiation is reflected from within. For many years the theory has been ridiculed by others in the field as saying it is impossible and goes against Newton’s Third Law of Motion, but they are soon to all be proved wrong as the idea is actually now closer than ever to coming to fruition.
The futuristic propulsion system, if up and running, would allow us to reach Mars in just a few weeks, and the moon in less than four hours. A paper on how the technology works is due to be published in the Journal of Propulsion and Power of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and is written by NASA’s Eagleworks Lab.
Because this type of method relies on using a closed system that utilizes electrical energy and microwaves to create thrust, there is no need for a propellant. But, this is exactly why others are skeptical that it won’t work as it defies the Third Law. But, if the idea is proved to be successful, this could really revolutionize space travel as we know it. And, with NASA now behind it, it leads us to believe that there must be some truth in it. So, is it time to re-write the science books?
