Volvo Trucks, a subsidiary of Swedish auto manufacturers Volvo, and the second largest heavy-duty truck brand in the world, has been breaking world records this week producing unbelievable speeds from these monster machines. Its latest creation has been nicknamed the “Iron Knight” and is a 2,400 horsepower big rig like no other. This truck is capable of achieving speeds of up to 172 miles per hour and can do 0-60 mph in just 4.6 seconds!
The Iron Knight was also timed to run from a standstill to 500 and 1,000 meters and managed to achieve super lightening times of 13.71 and 21.29 respectively. By the 500 meter point the big rig had reached a speed of 82 mph and by 1,000 meters was at 105 mph. Volvo already held the record for the fastest heavy duty truck, but this time, they did it with the new I-Shift Dual Clutch transmission which uses two separate gear trains for its twelve gears. One gear train is used for odd numbered gears, while the other is used for even numbered ones, allowing extra smooth gear changes.
Volvo carried out the world record run at a private test track in Sweden, and the FIA is currently reviewing the results, the international motorsport governing body, for certification. The thirteen liter, 4.5-ton heavy duty truck will continue to turn heads as it smashes these speed challenges with its beautiful looks and amazing power rolled into one.
