Hyperloop technology has been the focus of at least two companies now for the past few years. Hyperloop One is one of those companies and was formed to explore Elon Musk’s Hyperloop concept of transporting people or cargo in capsules through vacuum tubes at speeds of up 700 miles per hour. Now, the team is looking to get one step closer to building the futuristic speed-of-sound transportation system as they team up with one of the world’s largest port terminal operators, DP World.
The two companies will work together to study the possibility of using Hyperloop technology at Jebel Ali port in Dubai to unload the cargo from an ocean container. Using this method would minimize traffic on the surface and get the containers to an inland depot quickly. As part of the study, they will be exploring design, cost, and financing options and will also include delving deeper into the possibility of an offshore, floating hyperloop. This would allow containers to be taken from ships, placed in tubes, and quickly transported to an inland depot, reducing congestion and emissions.
If the study is successful and the plan goes ahead to use Hyperloop technology, this could mean very big changes ahead for DP World and Hyperloop One. DP World already operates 77 cargo terminals in more than 40 countries, so the networks they world be able to create would be like something out of this world. Ports globally are already in the discussion as to how they can solve the issues that are arising from increased port congestion, and this could be the answer to many of their problems. As well as studies in Dubai, the team is also conducting similar studies in the U.S., Switzerland, and Russia. So, it may not be too far in the future that we get to see this hyperloop technology in force, but it is almost certain that cargo will be the first step before allowing any passengers aboard the super-fast transportation system.
