Things Every Electric Vehicle’s Buyers Should Know

Although the idea of electric vehicles has been around since the 1800’s, it only really been in the last ten years that the idea has taken. More and more people are making the switch to electric vehicles as they begin to realize the potential savings that can be made as well as the environmental aspect of it. If statistics continue to increase for electric vehicle sales at the rate they are now, it won’t be too long before they hold the majority of all vehicles on the road.  It’s not just cars that are getting the transformation either.  There are now motorcycles, bikes, trains, trucks, buses, trams, and aircraft that use electric motors for propulsion.

There are many advantages to owning an electric vehicle. Firstly, maintenance costs are far lower in electric vehicles as there are less mechanical parts to go wrong.  Also, no longer will you have to carry out an oil change on your car, or replace any fan belts or spark plugs. The brakes on electric vehicles are also known to last longer as EV engines slow the car down by reversing the electric motor rather than applying force to stop it.  The batteries are also very durable with both Nissan Leaf and Chevy Volt offering eight year/100,000 mile warranties.

Another major plus for EV owners is the added benefit of being able to ‘charge up’ at home.  Also, it’s not a requirement to get an at-home charging station; it’s a very handy concept and one that is catching on quickly within the EV world as is so convenient.  Batteries will soon come down in price if they do need to be replaced.  One slight downfall to EV’s is that the batteries could lose around 20% efficiency at around 100,000, but by the time this comes around batteries should cost no more to replace than an oil change.

The main reason many people make the transition to EV’s is down to the cost, but there are a lot of people that change because of environmental reasons.  Although EV’s are not entirely clean as the electric it uses is produced by a power plant that emits lots of greenhouse gasses into the environment.  But, they still account for less than half of the carbon pollution by traditional cars over its lifetime.  Also, with the technological advances that are coming with EV’s people no longer have to worry about range issues.  Both the Tesla Model 3 and the Chevy Bolt have an advertised range of over 200 miles, which is pretty impressive.  So, with all that in mind, are you now ready to make the change?
