The number of electric vehicles on the roads today has risen incredibly in the past 5 years, and will continue to increase for quite some time. But, it’s not just electric cars that we are seeing more of. We are also seeing the same technology being applied to forklift trucks and delivery trucks. Now, fuel cell manufacturer, Plug Power, are looking to make electric delivery trucks even more efficient by fitting them with new hydrogen fuel cells.
Hydrogen fuel celled vehicles are still not that commonly used at the moment, but the U.S. Department of Energy Alternative Fuels Data Center predicts that by the end of the year the number of hydrogen fuel stations will rise to at least 50, making it a more attractive form of fuel. Plug Power is looking to increase that awareness even more and as well as continue to produce forklift trucks with hydrogen fuel cells they will start applying this technology to delivery vehicles also.
Hydrogen fuel-celled vehicles would be perfect for delivery firms or other companies that have vehicles out in the day and then return to base after their shift. Plug and Power have been working alongside both FedEx and the DOE in a $3 million research project in an attempt to try and triple the range of electric vehicles by using hydrogen fuel cell technology. But, until more hydrogen fuelling stations are introduced, firms may have to ‘fill up’ at their base location.
