Although the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster happened over three decades ago, it is still and event that lays heavy in many people’s hearts. It is the worst of its kind in history regarding both the cost and casualties involved in the accident. Now, the Ukrainian government is proposing to use the derelict site of the nuclear reactor to put some good use to it by building the world’s largest solar farm.
The idea that has been proposed by the government is to transform the existing, depressing, nuclear wasteland into something useful that will benefit the residents and in a small way act as a tribute to the 31 people that died during the Chernobyl disaster in 1986. Several banks have been approached to see if they want to participate and invest in the green initiative.
Estimates suggest that with the installation of the solar farm around 1,000MW of solar power could be generated from the solar farm itself whole another 400MW could be generated by other renewable energy sources. Although this is only a fraction of what the nuclear power plant would have produced at around 4,000MW, it is certainly a much safer and more environmentally friendly option, which is ultimately the reason behind doing it.
Questions are still being raised around the safety issues of the site and if there are any potential risks of contamination that people need to be worried about, but so far, no details have been revealed. But, the Bank for Reconstruction and Development do have a keen interest which is a good sign that the project will go ahead as long as environmental issues are dealt with.
