Tesla is quite often in the news for one thing or another but usually it is because they have smashed another record in the world of electric vehicles. Whether it is producing the fastest electric vehicle, or the one that can do the most miles in one single charge, Tesla have certainly made a name for themselves. But, this month Tesla have been under the spotlight for reasons they would probably rather not.
The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are currently investigating Tesla over a fatal crash that happened in a Model S in Florida in May of this year. It obviously comes as great sadness for Tesla as is the first fatality the company have endured where its Autopilot feature was enabled, and was a known companion of both Tesla and the electric vehicle community as a whole.
During a recent interview, Elon Musk, co-founder of Tesla stated that at the time of hearing of the crash, he was unaware that the Autopilot function was enabled, and feels that it wasn’t material to the investigation. As of yet, whether it was or was not a material fact is still to be determined by the experts. But, considering share prices have bounced back and not been negatively affected shows that the likeliness of the courts finding them in the wrong is low.
While the investigation continues, Musk is in a difficult position. He is warning people to use the Autopilot function with caution, but obviously is still promoting its use as he fully believes in his product and that this fatality is a random event and one that will be learned from. Auto accidents occur all the time, and the facts around this particular incident show no indication that things would have been any different without the Autopilot function in use. As with all driving, whether autonomous or not, just be aware of your surroundings at all time and remember that essentially your life is in your hands.
