Almost everywhere you go now; you will see building sporting rooftop solar panels. Whether they are on a residential home, office block, or hospital, their popularity is increasing daily as people become to recognize the massive savings they can benefit from. However, there is still so much space that they can be used but are not.
A recent report issued by the Energy Department’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) demonstrated America’s ability as a whole to employ the use of rooftop solar panels. They examined the rooftops of buildings in 128 cities across the country in order to assess their suitability to house rooftop solar panels and just how much power could be generated from them.
The results of the report were quite staggering in that overall, if you take those cities that were examined and analyze them against the rest of the country, it was found that 39 percent of America’s energy could be generated by rooftop solar panels alone. That is a massive potential saving!
However, this report only focused on rooftop solar panels. If you take into consideration the amount of space that is available and suitable for ground mounted solar panels or water based solar panels this figure would be much, much higher. And, if we were to be able to get space-based solar panels operational, the amount of energy available from the sun is more than enough to power everything! As technology advances and new techniques are developed, I can see more and more people adapting to the use of solar energy and maybe one day we will do away with traditional forms of electricity altogether.
