Rolls-Royce – A very big name indeed in the motor car industry, but not many people are as so clued up about their other division, Rolls-Royce Holdings, where they specialize in aircraft engines and marine propulsion among other things. This multi-billion dollar corporation has just unveiled its plans to make a breakthrough in the world of cargo shipping.
According to their recent announcement at the 2016 Autonomous Ship Technology Symposium, Rolls-Royce is set to take the world of cargo shipping to the next level by introducing a fleet of unmanned, remote-controlled cargo ships as early as 2020. Trials are already undergone in Finland as scientists test the ability of the sensor rays to work in different temperatures and conditions.
There are obviously still a few issues to be ironed out over the next four years, including the immediate concern of piracy. How they will be able to build a ship that can fight off pirates is certainly something worth waiting for in itself. But, if they are able to overcome the hurdles that face them, then they will be able to maximize space for cargo by ridding of the living quarters that are currently needed on the ships.
All will have savings when these ships are introduced as they would be quicker, more efficient and cost far less to run than traditional vessels. And although Rolls-Royce has only just unveiled their plans, this is a project they have been working on secretly for quite some time now so you can be assured there will have been no expense spared in creating the fleet. So, look out 2020 as our goods seek to reach the shores with the help of Rolls-Royce’s autonomous cargo ships.
