Researchers Now Discovered How To See Through a Black Hole

Black holes are regions of space where the gravitational pull is so strong that even light can not escape it and so appear to be invisible.  For this reason, black holes are not always easy to detect and so scientists have difficulty in being able to study them to their full extent.  However, they may have just had a breakthrough….

Only this year, did scientists experience the first direct observation of gravitational waves from black hole mergers. A few months later, a second was observed.  This is an amazing leap forward for scientists as they discuss the phenomena at the 228th meeting of the American Astronomical Society in San Diego.

Research team led by Kielan Wilcomb of Towson University feel that the best way to really view properties of a black hole is through quantities that are coordinate-invariant.  According to studies, there are 17 different mathematical quantities, called invariants that relate to the curvature of space-time.  Studies have also uncovered that only 5 of these quantities are needed to fully distinguish and characterise the curvature of space-time in all black holes and allow exploration on a much deeper level.

The research that Wilcomb and team have carried out has been published on arXiv.org in hopes that other physicists will use the invariants to create their own black hole to study.  The researchers themselves have been delighted with the results and find it truly fascinating to finally uncover a ‘black hole’ in our knowledge and learn more about these fascinating regions of space-time.
