Mercedes have always been a company for offering elegance, class and new technology and their latest gadget that we are hoping to see as early as next year comes in the form of a wireless charging facility similar to that of wirelessly charging smartphones.
The mega auto manufacturer made the broadcast just recently about their plans having the technology available for the S500e hybrid in 2017 and if that all goes well then we may see more of this technology featured in other models shortly after. Although they will first of all be offering this feature as an optional extra, Mercedes are looking to include this aspect as standard in all their electric models eventually.
So, the way in which this marvellous invention will work is by fitting a coil underneath the vehicle’s engine bay. A primary coil base plate is then fitted at the required charging location (i.e. the garage). By using in-car screens and visual prompts the once in range, the driver is guided into the correct position ready for charging. Once in place, the charging will begin automatically as an electromagnetic field is formed between the two coils, allowing the transferring of energy.
Further testing is still being carried out by Mercedes as is only currently 90% effective, and the need to adjust the sensors for 4×4 is still to be ironed out. But, once these minor improvements have been carried out, there will be no stopping them and this wireless form of charging is set to be just as quick as the traditional plug charging and much better for the environment too.
