Railguns are electromagnetic projectile launchers that use electricity rather than gunpowder or chemicals to cause an explosion. They can move at much faster speeds than that of a traditional weapon and can cause devastating damage.
America is plowing funds into developing these weapons right now as they discover the many advantages over more traditional guns. Railguns shoot projectiles at alarming speeds and rather than losing acceleration as normal weapons would, the railgun bullets get faster. Tests carried out have confirmed the almighty acceleration of projectiles of these weapons as being 4,500 miles an hour upon exiting the gun’s muzzle. That is pretty fast by anyone’s standards considering the average bullet from any other gun is around 1,700 miles per hour!
If the powers that be do get their way, railguns will be used in all branches including the Army, Air Force, and Navy, and that won’t be too difficult for them to achieve. With Ronald Reagan already stirring the desire to have railgun technologies with the Star Wars missile defense, to use now as part of our current defense strategy the technology is available, it just needs a little ‘tweaking’.
The Navy and other sea-based military divisions will be one of the first to benefit from railgun technology, with battleships and destroyers being at the front of the queue. This will be a breakthrough for the ships whose weaponry is currently outdated or obsolete. Soon other divisions will follow, and new weaponry will be used as standard practice, but what cost implications this will have is yet to be seen.
